What was your bad experience? Where did it start? How did it end?
I remember i posted on here, as a kid, that i didn't like the Rickenbacker pricing scheme. To me it undermines capitalist principals by deception. For those of you who aren't familiar, Rickenbacker chooses its distributors and they are bound by rules (established by Rickenbacker) against posting their prices publicly (on new and sometimes used instruments). This is why you always have to contact them for a price, and it usually hovers right around MSRP. This serves two purposes: it makes it hard to gauge a price of a new Rickenbacker, and it makes it hard to gauge the price of a used Rickenbacker. Owners and Businesses usually opt to respond the MSRP price, and small-businesses are usually more apt to haggle. Some. Ultimately this just serves to keep their demand and price on their instruments high. I, personally, always tend to think of Rickenbacker as the highest-quality low-end instrument you can buy. If you go back and look at all of your idols who have used them, they were happy with them for a little while and went to move on because the instrument was always too low end. Save, a few of course, and this isn't always the standard. All of this, of course, it just my opinion.
Unbeknownst to me, John Hall | TalkBass.com is a member here, and does make an appearance from time to time. He sent me a PM. In it, he called his pricing scheme the last the ultimate display of capitalism because his distributors get to choose what they want to sell his guitars at and at what price without outside influence of customers driving them down (his words). It was very strongly worded.
This really got me into the political side of Rickenbacker. What's really interesting is that you don't have to go far to see what a bad person Hall is. He just doesn't disagree with you, he insults you and flexes his position while doing so. It's interesting as hell. Anyone who meets Hall and has something negative to say about a Rickenbacker practice has a story to tell about how Hall sat and argued with them (or more). I didn't receive a damning PM here by any means, like i said, it was just strongly worded, but i honestly believe I've had probably the nicest discourse with him that anyone could have.
TL;DR That stems my Riceknbacker hate. They created this little market-bubble driven by image of idol's from the 1980's and use it to jack up their prices by not publicly displaying MSRP.
What's your reason for Rickenbacker-hate?
