I'm used to P necks, so playing my Epi is a bit of a change, but it works well for what it is, and gets the vibe. For the money, decent bass.

Get the hofner the Epi sounds very modern compared to the Hofner The Hofner has a much more confortable neck pls pls do not judge the Hofner in store by the round wound they are terrible with flats they sound awesome the small nevk makes fast blues shuffles a piece of cake

If you want to switch over to bass look into the squire vm bass vi. Shortscale bass with six strings and almost like a guitar.

I play my Epiphone Viola out quite a bit and our sound guy loves it. It has a strong output, is solid, and looks great. I have one of the newer ones, and it compares favorably with the older, more expensive Korean model I had at the start of this century. At $300, you can usually get it discounted at MF by 15%. A steal in my opinion.

Epiphone Rumblekat...unless your dead set on a violin bass.

I was able to play a used RumbleKat in a music store through a Fender amp. Thunder is apropos for this little gem.

Even though I don't want a short scale, every time I go into Robbie's Music in Wayne, NJ I look at the Rumblekat hanging up in the back corner. Every once in a while I check out ebay, too, and almost bid on one the other day that just sold for $290!

Feels better and sounds better than quite a few violin basses I've played...very substantial feeling, doesn't feel as flimsy to me.
