How anonymous are forums like this?

There was something in my paper about a week ago about some kids whod been posing on cop cars with their guns and what not and the cops just said that they couldnt prove anything even though their were pics and videos online so I thought that was a bit odd
Can you elabourate on 'most'? Do you mean people who arn't operating this site can, to some degree?

Depends entirely on your computer skills. If you know what you're doing you can be untraceable (to an extent). However, the common user can be traced very easily. It wouldn't take a lot of work to find out anyone's name and home address given you have their IP.
Yes, people who are not operating this site. Morf summed it up in his reply above. Your average web surfer probably doesn't even care for one, but also does not have the knowledge or tools to track someone down on a message board.
At the same time, there are people on every message board who do have the tools, knowledge, and desire to hunt someone down and find out just about anything about another person. THIS is why you should always be nice and respectful when posting on message boards. You just never know who else is "watching" you.
A few months ago, I was ripped off by a guy on another message board. Within a day, I had this guys full name, his wifes full name, the name of his daughters, the hospital his daughter was born in, the name of the doctor who was treating his ill child, the names and addresses of every landlord he ever rented from, and where he worked. When I started dropping this knowledge on him, he paid me back.

I have no desire to be able to get hold of information like that but it would be really interesting to know how it was done (not asking, just commenting).

The forum admins, server admins, and datacenter admins can find a good deal of information. It also depends on what you post. I remember another forum where a member was posting about committing suicide while posting. Members were able to get on IM and keep him there long enough for help to arrive. I help admin a forum with 180,000+ members with anywhere from 30-3,000 online at one time. We have been able to turn over information about members to the authorities before.
It all depends on skill, what is posted, where it is posted from and how long the perosn is online.

I wouldn't suggest putting anything on here you wouldn't want your mom/police/preacher/wife/whatever to see. Cause it *will* come back to bite you.
Oh, and btw, the internet is archived.......so even if you think you deleted it, it's there somewhere. Comes in handy when a website gets hacked though, just go through the archives and reload.
