I hate to be a bother, but i've been trying to make another attempt at a first bass, because my used ibanez is nearly unplayable.(High action, Broken truss rod, broken EQ knob, ect.)But i've been lollygagging. But i've recently been thinking of getting this jay turser 50s tele style bass. [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] I'm probably gonna mod it anyway, but i just want to know how jay tursers are in general, and what wood it's made out of. I've heard that jay tursers are made out of alder, or ash, but the site doesn't say. I'm afraid that it might be basswood like the squiers, and i've heard basswood is one of the worst tone woods. How are jay tursers?

Basswood is not necessarily a bad tonewood, just not the most poplar. 
For that particular bass, there has been some very strong praise for it here on TB and elsewhere. A lot of folks say it plays and sounds great, very much worth the money.

For a first bass, tone woods shouldnt even be in your list of things to worry about. Ive played a Jay Turser, and its not bad. If you want to actually play something very similar first, track down one of the squier Dirnt models. The neck is almost exactly the same, and the weight is really close.
For a beginner bass you should worry more about playability, and ease of the instrument to learn on.
And hey! Dont knock squiers! I have a squier, and its my primary gigging bass, recording bass, and practice bass. I love it.
I'll probably try one of the mike dirnts if i can go to guitar center anytime soon. Regardless of it's high action my ibanez neck plays pretty well, so if it's anything like that it should be fine. And don't get me wrong, i'm not knocking squiers, it's not exactly the tone of basswood i'm worried about, it's just that i've heard basswood is a really dense wood and i'm a really clumsy person

I've tried that bass, and it weighed about 4 pounds. So I doubt it's basswood, ash, alder, poplar, or any other wood we're used to seeing on a solid body bass. My first thought was it has to be balsa, but I don't think they can do that.
I keep thinking that about my Jay Turser P. It seriously looks like balsa. I've had plenty of those cheap model airplanes (the ones you get at fairs and fireworks shows) and I know balsa. Plus, it weighs less than floating cool whip.
