Sounds to me like the pickups are really close to the strings giving the oscillating tone on the low notes. You can see he’s plucking very lightly. My money is on the setup of the bass/technique rather than an effect.

I think you could get very close with technique, bridge pickup, tone rolled halfway or a little more down.

I may hear a bit of drive, sounds like a hot bass and could just be intentional signal and not a pedal.

Jazz bass just bridge pickup, tone rolled down, going into a (JHS) colour box v2, Cali 76, benson germanium preamp, and noble. Then extra compression and a little saturation in post

So not really "effects" but 3 preamps stacked so some heavy EQing and compression

What you are hearing is technique. Not strings. You don't need ( and likely wouldn't notice mild amounts of) compression if your volume is moderate and your technique is dead on.

This video is an example of good control, excellent muting, and playing near/over the bridge pickup. You could get this sound unplugged with the right technique.

You're hearing experience. Control. Finesse. Don't look to equipment to get that sound.

Solo the bridge pup, roll the tone back, boost some bass/low mids and you'll be in the sonic territory.

Everyone talking about technique has a strong point, but there is without a doubt a bit of sonic finesse going on to get that tasty tone.

I completely agree with you here. The first thing that struck me about the clip is the player's technique, not the tone. Solid timing, great touch, excellent muting, control over note length - that is the "tone" people mean with the classic statement "tone is in the fingers".
The signal chain is obviously important for achieving a specific tone (in the classic meaning) but focusing on that is majoring in the minors.

Taking the player and his technique out of this (as if . . . . ), to get in the neighborhood of that tone is to solo the bridge pickup, pick/pluck all the way back there, and crank the deep end and high mids to get you in that tone ballpark. A lot of this is WHERE he's striking the strings.
