since i've joined TB i've been inspired to build my own bass. i probably don't have the time or money for it right now, but it's something i definitely want to try some day. so i'm wondering.... how did everyone get started? did you just dive ride in with some guide books handy? did you have an experienced luthier help on your first build? about how much money did you spend on tools and such? i've read through a bit of the "how to" threads but i still feel like i wouldn't even know where to begin....

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED AS A LUTHIER?

on all commercial basses i always find at least one thing i wish was more suited to me, plus i like to build things. on all my project basses (so far only one that has been put into the stages of making it, do to lack of muh-la), i usually like to do something i have not seen before, usually pickup choice. my mind likes to wander, and i get this image of a bass build in my head its like once its though, it is like i have to make it, or its stuck in my head. plus i take woodshop class, and don't want to make crappy shelves
All I can suggest is for you to go get a whole bunch of pine and a router and try it out. You will make plenty of mistakes and that is fine, read the how-to's and ask questions on TB. You'll figure it out pretty quick if building is for you. Good luck.
For me I just bought the parts(not a kit I hate it when people ask that)and started gluing them together it took me a year and a half (stopped to figure out what I was doing many times)but I got it done and I've had 1or4 in the making ever sense.
