How do YOU deal with tailgaters?

I have a .50 calibre machine gun installed in the trunk of my car, facing backwards. If anybody crawls up my rear and stays there, I just pop the trunk and let them have it.

Quick and clean. That's the way I like it.

I've often thought it would be cool to have a paint gun installed on the car. That way, I could mark the idjits' cars in, oh, let's say, bright purple paint, as a public service.

Reminds me of a 70's radio commentary with this premise:

Every driver should be issued a stopper-gun and an allotment of stoppers with "Idiot" flags on them. Any time you see someone do something stupid while driving, you shoot their car with an "idiot tag". Any car with 3 or more Idiot tags gets a citation, no questions asked.
The reason for three, all of us make a dumb move every once in a while.

What do you think of this statement: "You Must Not Insist On The Right-Of-Way. The law does not really give anyone the right-of-way. It only says who must yield it. A driver must do everything possible to avoid a traffic accident."

You know, those dominant Alpha-Males who foolishly ride up on your butt because they think you're going to move for them. Happens here all the time. Michigan drivers are the biggest A-holes in the country. You could be doing 85 in a 70 and they will still tailgate.

How do you people deal with them?

Me personally, I take it as an insult. Unless someone is in the fast lane doing the exact speed limit, while holding up the flow of traffic, there is no reason to ever ride somone.

Usually when someone rides me and expects me to move. I do the complete opposite. I usually lift my foot off the gas and slow down until they pass, or if they are really agressive, I get up along side a slower moving car, and go to the same speed, making it impossibe for them to pass anyone. When they back off, I speed back up. Repeat process. This really messes with them, and makes them angry.

There is always the good break-tap too. I only use this when I'm really annoyed.

You're going to do that to the wrong person one day and get yourself into a lot of trouble. I'm not familiar with Michigan drivers, but I've lived in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Bronx, NY, and Boston, MA and I've seen people get really hurt because of their driving.

Personally, if I'm driving slow, I'll move out of the way to accommodate and I would expect the same in return. I'm not a "dominant Alpha-Male" as you so eloquently put it, I'm just a regular person who does not like being crossed.

Do you need to re-think what you posted earlier saying,

Faster traffic has the right of way..
..let the person with the right of way pass.

?

Something is at odds.

Or another way. If you agree with the complete statement, would you not also have to accomodate someone traveling within the legal speed limits in the left lane, if that is what it takes to avoid an accident?

The arguments either way are rather moot with me. I rarely hit the left lane. However, IMHO, YMMV the concept of a "speed Limit" and the "Must Yield to faster traffic" laws are in conflict. If we install a limit, then the slower traffic keep right concept is no longer in play once the maximum legal limit is reached (this seems to be the way it is enforced locally). If we choose the latter, then the limit should be removed.
To me, it should be one or the other. Having both in play simply causes the frustration expressed in this thread.

I remember that one! But in the Texas heat, the stoppers won't stick very well. So we'll have to institute the use of paintballs down here. LOL!

Seriously...I understand that sometimes people can't drive the speed limit, for whatever reason. Their car is no bueno, the kids are distracting them, or they're sick. Or drunk.

And I understand that, if I'm behind Papaw Pokey-Joe on a 2-lane road, Papaw wins. I can't pass him, and he's not going to go anywhere *near* the speed limit.

But if I can pass you safely, *please* Papaw Pokey-Joe...And To Pokey-Joe's Everywhere...

Don't try to speed up while I'm passing you!!! Let me go around you. I don't want to poke along at snail speed when I can drive 50 or 55 safely. I get out of the way for Mr. Young-Whipper Snapper's TransAm when he wants to go 75. Please get out of mine when I want to merely drive the legal limit.

Diggler, I will state it once again.

I absolutely believe, participate in, and support, vigilante justice. If I am wronged, and I know that the Law will not help the situation, be it no witnesses to side with me or no proof that I was wronged, then I WILL administer punishment.

If someone was breaking into my car to steal my bass gear, I will beat the snot outta them, drag them to a curb, put their heels on the curb, and sit on their kneecaps. I will not wait for a cop to show up and write a police report that my gear is gone, while the thief runs off with my well-earned gear. I will cripple him permanently, without a fraction of guilt upon my conscience.

Someday, I believe someone will shoot and kill you if you continue with this attitude. Check your ego, you'll live longer.

Please, your desire to go the speed you want to does not trump my desire to go the speed I want to. If I have to substantially slow down/inconvenience myself so that you can drive ninety miles an hour, then it's not happening.

Yes, but in this case, one must consider the overall risks and consequences.

For the reasons I've already stated, not yielding the right of way is more likely to at the very least inconvenience a greater number of people, and at most put others at greater risk.

It's also about being courteous, and repectful.

There is no defending tailgating, but if you can move over, and don't, because you either haven't been watching your mirror, or are simply belligerant and arrogant (and that's why someone has finally arrived at your trunk), then you are the one trangressing not only against the law, but against courtesy and safety, and are in fact the aggressor in this conflict you so eloquently pointed out, essentially having "started it". It's a form of passive-agressiveness, and can trigger road rage. It's actually quite serious, perhaps for that reason alone, and we hadn't even touched on that point really yet.

Keep right except to pass. It's not that difficult, and it's the right thing to do.

Being a network admin that supports many different types of business clients, the saying..."A failure to plan on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine." is just as appropriate to my line of business as it is to this discussion.

I have many customers who feel their world is falling apart because they can't print a document and I need to fix their problem NOW, unknowing that I am working on another's server that totally crashed. Each, from their perspective, is more important.

So it is with tailgaters. How dare someone slow them down! Don't these people know that the tailgater is more important than them? Don't they understand that no matter where they are going or when they need to get there, the tailgater's destination and time constraints are more important? Just because these people know how long it takes to get somewhere, and plan accordingly, doesn't mean the tailgater has to waste his valuable time doing the same. How dare they?

It's interesting how some people behave so differently in person than they do when they have a 3000 lb. missile wrapped around them.

You know that slow drivers in front of you are doing it on purpose just to irritate you, right? Just like the stop lights turning red at the worst moment have it in for you too.

Maybe after you run that slow motion jerk off the road, you can swing by and take out the lights while you're at it.
