What the topic says. I've been thinking about jumping into constructing a bass using parts from some supplier (probably Warmoth?) but I quickly found out I was in over my head. For one thing, there are a LOT more woods than I thought (Maple, Alder, and Ash are pretty much all I've really heard of, with a couple exceptions) and Warmoth identifies them by their "dark" or "bright" tone.
So I've got some more research to do, but I figured this bit might be an interesting point of discussion: how do you define a "dark" tone? How does it differ from a "bright" one? I've gathered that bright is very distinct, but I've listened to recordings of songs with supposedly "dark" bass tone that sound equally distinct to me. Could someone clear this up?
