How do you get over GAS?

I want a HOFNER violin bass. I already have a no-name violin bass which looks nice, feels good and sounds great. But I want a HOFNER. If I buy a HOFNER it will be the inexpensive model, which will have slightly different coloration than the no-name bass that I currently play, but will feel and sound almost exactly the same, it won't have any bragging rights, because anyone that would know the difference between a HOFNER and what I currently own would also know that this isn't the German made model. Intellectually I know that there is no reason to buy this bass. But I WANT A HOFNER!

HELP!!!!!!

And are you talking about the "Ignition" or the real deal, one of the German handmade Hofner "Elektrobässe"?

To tease you more, the clip of how these basses are built:

And to answer your question: you can't.
(and to state one the Beatles hits "Help" doesn't help too)

I'm very sorry to have to say all this and wish you strength and wisdom...

:D

GAS?!! For years I only ever had one bass guitar,a VM Jazz 70's and was very satisfied with it......until I found this site with all the different bass models that are available. Many of them I had never heard of but I still came back here to gain more knowledge and insight only to find my wallet getting smaller and smaller. So now I have 7 basses (2 Precisions/2 Jazz's/1 Squier Protone/1 Godin PJ/a modded OLP) and there are still more that I would like to own. So to cure GAS I should stay away from this site!:help:

Cure for GAS? All it takes it money.

I'm pretty much out of gas but I still enjoy looking. The only cure for me was getting everything I wanted. Sad but true. Now I have 13 basses (ok 14 but I'm selling one), 3 killer rigs plus combo amps for home and band practice. Also 3 guitars and a decent guitar amp. At one point I had about 20 straps but I had a big sell off about 6 or 8 months ago, so only 10 or so now. (I did it all by buying/selling/trading with only about a $1500 initial investment, but that's a story for a different day).

How do I know I'm out of gas? Even though I like looking at gear, I like the stuff I have better than all the GAS bait I see on Talkbass and eBay.

Talkbass is a BIG source of GAS. Of that there is no doubt. I keep it suppressed by turning off new gear posting notifications... those will cause major lust for stuff you disn't wake up knowing you "need".

Up side (besides awesome gear) is that I've learned a LOT about bass along the way. I was new to bass about 5 years ago. Now I can talk the talk. My new focus is being a better, more well rounded player.

One day, I will sell all but a few of my basses and pay for my girls college or something. That's when GAS will finally be laid to rest.

I was a drummer before taking up the bass. I had well over $30,000 wrapped up in hardware. One day looking at everything I said do I need three compete kits, a dozen snares, Lord I can`t count the cymbals? Hell yes:roflmao: Well we were selling the house and moving into a much smaller place. When it came time to sell it, I took a huge loss.............well I hate to even think about it. So I thought then I was cured, Nope, I said I`m going to start a small Modular Synth, seven to eight grand later I still was not content, "just one more module" I used too say each time. Gas still not cured. Then the hammer falls, I become disabled, boring health stuff I won`t bother you with. Sell the Modular system too pay medical bills. I do believe I am finally cured because my income is very limited. I`m currently saving for a higher end bass and amp. So I do think there is a cure, you may not be ready for it though. I am happier more now than ever though......................Darn, I should have started with the BASS:thumbsup:

Y'know what the internet has been the fleas of the Bubonic Plague. Gas has always been around, but it never was exposed on a world wide basis on your desktop when nobody was watching. So, just like that plague, some recovered miraculously, some were immune, some never got bit but most were afflicted till they died. Sorry no good news.
I feel your pain, man, I was gassing for a CT this week too. I took out my icon and Viola and played the living snot out of them and realized what good basses they were and I'm okay for now. But I can't help but have that nagging little doubt that the CT might be just a taaaaaad better. drool

Marriage and a newborn child. Coupled with an unpaid internship.

I am trying to make a habit out of contentment although the temptation is always there. I am trying to sell off gear.

I made a spreadsheet with all my GAS: buying/selling, trading etc. I have had over 60k of gear over the past 15 years, and I am an amateur at best. I spent close to 35k and lost about 10k. Comparing that to my student loans is sobering. My partner and I agreed to one acoustic, 2 basses, 2 guitars. That works for me.
