How do you get that growly sound

yeah that Growl. im playing a sound gear by ibanez its a 5 sting . Im in love with that sound but i just cant get it. Yeah it has bar soap pick ups i wish i could some new ones. Im saving up for a music man or fender jazz so that will solve my problem but for the time being id like to get something close to it. What are some recommended settings like bass 50%,gain 25%,ect.

well there are several kinds of growl that you could be going for, for me a lot of it comes from how your bass is set up, if you have quite a low action and new steel strings, but really to know exactly how to help we gotta know what amp you are using.

Dave

nordstrand pickups + aguliar 0bp-3 or bartolini 4.7 a/p (18 volt)
best instand growl ever if you want to go into everything growl
-wenge/wenge neck and fretboard
-swamp ash body (walnut if you want a clearer mid range tho)
-stainless steel strings (dr, labella, conklin, ect.)
- amps...? put the gain up not to bommy as bass thump the treb. and set mid to taste

i know theses a valenti bass around here that is i think exact to these specs and it looks effin awsome!

A growl thread and no mention of Warwick? Unthinkable. Thumbs are growl monsters.

I was just on my way to say, "Just grab a thumb and grit your teeth." Probably the best growl I've gotten out of my thumb is through a Ampeg CL, 300w Tube head going into my SWR 4x10 Goliath. It cut through the mix like butter but it wasn't too loud by any means, the tone was just solid and yes, growly.

If your looking for that growl I would recomend you sticking with your Ibenez or an ESP bass.

The musicman basses you said you want have a more "warmer" traditional sound.

I would agree with most in here that you do have to have the right adjustments on your bass like new strings, the right pickups and action, but that's just the half of it.

Your amp and head is the other half.

Can you play gigs just fine and go on tour with a 400 watt head?? Yes you can

BUT!! if your looking for that big growl "tone" has alot to do with it.I've noticed that using a head that can push a 1000 watts plus has a much better "tone".

Do we need all that power? No.But the sound it puts out I find to be much better than a lower watt head.

One more key factor. When I hooked up a rackmountable "sansamp" that was the cherry on top!It made a HUGE difference in my tone as well.

Good luck

Do you mean a plain growl, or a pile drivingly heavy growl?

If it's the latter, you need to do this:
