How do you know when to start a new band?

I haven't been in a "real band" for about a year now and i don't know if i should start a new band or not. I live in a place where all i can find is "metal" Guitarists. I mean that they can "shred", but thats about it. I don't want show offs (when the time comes solo, but not all the time.) That being said, should i try and find some people and just get out there for experience?

Also i didn't know where to put this so i put it here.

Its true, i hang out with metalheads and i am by no means a metal head, but alternatively i hang out with jazzers too but i like both. The speed and power of metal and the complexity and groove of jazz, with a bit of prog sensibilities thrown in. I don't know how to find members though either.

You start a new band when you want to play in a band but there's no existing band around for you to join. Probably best to start by jamming with people and see if it gels into a more permanent group.

To find members - hang around open mics and network with people. Say that you're looking for a band or thinking of starting one, and see if anyone is interested or knows someone who might be interested. Post on craigslist but be aware that you'll attract a lot of flakes to sift through.

You'll also need to think about where to rehearse, and coming up with a PA sooner or later.
