How do you pick a new bass?

Sound, tone and playability are my top three concerns all rolled into one. Then I worry about looks, though this is still a significant factor.

An important thing to bear in mind that hasn't been mentioned on this thread yet: If at all possible, try the bass out with your band or any guys you play with before you buy. What sounds good on its own can sound very different with the rest of the band.

Weight?
Not too important for me. After my t-40 everything else seems light

Price?
I love a good bargain, so I will usually try to find a used bass first.

Sound?
Super important. Again... Super important. I've picked up alot of basses that I wanted to like, but didn't speak to me sonically.

Neck width?
I like a variety of neck widths, but if the neck aint comfortable it's not worth getting.

Body shape?
It has to appeal to me visually, or I will have no desire to play it.

Pick up type?
Not too important, but the quality of the pup should be good. That said, I have never met an EMG that I liked...

Name Brand?
This is important to me regarding the brands reputation for quality and customer service. Brand prestige means little. Brand reputation from real users is very important.

Overall look of it?
The design asthetic is very important to me. It was what first drew me to Lakland, though it was the quality that made me get one.
