How do you reference strings when not using notes?

How do you reference a string w/o using a note reference?

  • Top string is closest to your face & Bottom string is closest to your feet

  • Top string is closest to your feet & Bottom string is closest to your face

  • 1st string is closest to your feet & 4th string is closer to your face

  • 1st string is closest to your face & 4th string is closer to your feet

  • we don't "carrot" all

In Drop D this is not the E string anymore. This is the 4th string tuned to D. I do not understand the need to complicate things further ;)

Na man,,, It's the E string tuned to D...;)

Of course, I was and am being facetious, and you are right.
It's good when we have a common language - it can help to avoid confusion. By the looks of this thread, there is a lot of confusion out there.

So when you get a set of strings with numbered envelopes, you string your bass up backwards?

Which brand numbers the strings? All thats on mine is gauge size, but i'm hardly gonna write that up ain't i? Anyway, like someone else said in this thread, i mainly use EADG (or mostly in my case atm BEADG) If i would want to number it 1-4 i'd do it as i just said. If bloody manufacterers think they can tell me how to number my strings i get even more persistent in doing it the other way around :P

Offhand, we use numbered envelopes for Round Core Bass Boomers and Balanced Nickels. And, there's a slew of private label customers that use numbered envelopes as well.

Okay, so you would string your bass backwards.

Hey, if you wanna go against what's been industry standard for decades (and more, before people started buying strings by gauge), more power to you sir!

As a teenager, I taught myself guitar using tabs in guitar mags. They seemed upside down to me but that's the way it was written. Because of that I think of the highest pitched string as the 1st string because it was on the top of the tabs. If my thinking is backwards, that's why.

Oh i see... it's backwards because of the numbering thats not even on my strings... well then yes.

For the rest, i'm not going against anything. I'm just making music. don't have much care for industries and their standards in that. You good luck with that then sir!

Food for thought...
