How do you remember names??

To all those who have said they don't care to remember names, it really does make a difference. People LOVE to hear their own names, and often will give you better service in a restaurant, store, etc... and also, from a a musician's standpoint, if you remember a fan's name or something it will really make their day. That said, I'm really awful with names, and tend to remember the simpler names moreso than the really bizarre ones...

I agree 100%. You never know who you are going to meet, or meet a second time. In my business, at a show, the most important people I may encounter could be dressed in jeans, t shirt and carrying a backpack. They could also be wearing a 3 piece suite. Basically, anyone could be a very important contact. Important enough where it would be best to remember their name!!

"Natalie?" "Hi, Natalie, I'm Matt" "I've always liked the name Natalie, that very pretty name" (conversation) "It was nice to meet you Natalie…"



I'm sure you get the point, the more you say it the more likely you are to remember it.

That's good advice, Matthew. In fact, Matthew, I remember reading that somewhere, Matthew. Matthew, I do this occasssionally myself. The key, as you (Matthew) said, is to make it sound natural, Matthew. Thanks for reinforcing this (Matthew) idea, Matthew.

I met a cute chick in a bar once (not expecting to go anywhere w/ her) and forgot her name as soon as she shared it w/ me

it went something like this
girl:you want to take a cab uptown?
me:I'd love to, but I'm broke
girl:it's okay, I've got like a hundred dollars
me:a hundred dollars?! don't tell me that, I'll rob you!

I ended up taking cabs all over town w/ her (at her expense), having lots of fun, etc., and getting her number at the end of the night............only problem was by then I'd forgotten her name.

So several days later........

*ring, ring.......

her:hello?
me:Hey! it's me, Floater!
her:oh, wow! What's up?
me:Oh nothin' much.....Hey, let's play a game! My name is Floater, which rhymes w/ boater..........now your turn!
her:*click

shame, she was cute....

Well, you could tell them they're fine, except their names are Sarah, Earl and Lisa(or whatever else comes to mind).;)

I've never veen good at remembering names, to the point of blanking on names of people I work with on a daily basis. I do what another poster does and try and avoid having to use their name.

Faces, on the other hand always stick with me. I'll see someone I crossed paths with professionally years ago, and remember where I met them, some of what we talked about, etc. Their name? Fuhgitaboudit.

I have tried the shake your hand and repeat your name thing, but it only helps me shortterm.

If you absolutely need to remeber names for business contacts, why not just write it dow, along with something about them? "Mike, the guy with the peg-leg" on the back of a business card or something might help.

I write my name on the label of my shirts and things.




Oh wait, other peoples names.... hmm I suck with them more than my own. Worst thing is I meet a lot of people when I am drunk and that just compounds things.

I'm with ya FL. For some reason I can easily remember what piece of gear I sold someone, but for the life of me I can't remember names! It usually works out okay for me though because they're usually impressed that I remembered what I sold them and don't care that I can't remember their name.

customer walks in
me: Hey...man....how's that Candy Apple Red Strat treating you?
customer: Wow! Good memory!

I've tried tying names to gear in the past, but it never works...I always forget the name :hmm:

That's me... I'm just flat out honest with them... I'll usually say something like this:

"Hey nice to meet you... Don't be offended if I say this again next time I see you. I'll probably ask you your name again for at least another couple of times."

If the person gets offended, I'll remember that and say to myself in my head That's Bob, he doesn't like me. F him anyway...

If the person laughs, then I say to myself That dudes a funny guy... What's his name again? We should go and get drunk...

I think I'm ********. :scowl:
