Double Bass How do you rosin a bow?

Im new to upright bass, and i need to rosin up my bow but i dunno how

I just bought some Pirastro Bass mittel rosin, and it comes in a tin. Do i take it out or leave it in in case it dries up?

When you swipe your bow in one stroke on the rosin(beginning from the frog to tip), do it in a swift motion if you can. Also, pirastro rosin is really bad. I would go with Oak rosin, http://www.gregorianstrings.com/ .
 
The best way to evaluate it is to use it, and see how it sounds for your playing style. Some people like really sticky rosin; others prefer it more dry.

I got some oak rosin from my teacher a while back (he had some old cakes that he left out) and I stuck them in a zip-loc with a small sponge, getting the sponge a little wet. After a week or so they were ready to use, and man, they really were a lot better than the cheapy stuff I had before.

For me, it was about having to use less of it to get a better sound. I like it grippy without being TOO grippy because I don't really dig into the strings.
 
I swipe both directions and short back & forth strokes all over the hair. The stuff about one direction being better than another is a myth. Of course it also works, but it's a myth. the bow hair doesn't have little barbs on it either. It is rough, but not regularly scaly like some folks think. If there is any disadvantage to my method, then all my teachers are also doing it wrong.
 
The difference being?
Minor point, but for a long time it was thought that "barbed scales" regularly oriented in one direction were on the surface of the hair. The platelets are irregular and generally have a random orientation. The hair surface has no directional property, at least not horse hair.

So slide the hair over the rosin however it suits you, as long as you get it on the hair from end to end, it's all good.
 
I'm sorry, but you've been misinformed. I spent about a decade studying hair structure and chemistry - and the horse hair in the electron-microscope photographs that I posted a link to looks exactly like many examples of human hair.

I don't know what your definition of a "barbed scale" is - but a platelet and a scale are synonymous concepts, and hair has them. The accepted term in North America is 'cuticle'. They are not uniformly shaped, or rounded like a fish scale as is sometimes shown in simplified diagrams, but the edges do lift under application of heat or alkaline substances. The opposite is also true - the cuticle will seal up if shocked with cold water or exposed to a mild acid. If you've seen a photograph of the hair shaft in this state, you will have seen that it looks nearly perfectly smooth - surface irregularities aside. Remember that the cuticle itself is only a few microns thin, and translucent and would be difficult to see when closed down.

It *is* directional. That is apparent in the photos. Now whether most bow hair has been kept in the original orientation until it is installed on a bow, or if the hair strands themselves have a "random orientation" because of handling - that I do not know. A couple of people have posted that the hair is kept tied together and oriented as it came off the horse - and that seems reasonable to me.

Whether you need to rosin your bow in one direction is obviously up to you and your teacher.

It is plausible that I'm misinformed, but it is more likely that we cite somewhat different information sources and studies. I too researched this a while back, and cited studies on this forum. And, I have seen electron micrographs (horsehair) that show the edges of the platelets overlapping randomly as if randomly stacked. I have also seen similar photos of human hair, which has the directional quality of the platelets. So we just have different information sources and I think it is difficult to extrapolate from those more than was evident in each study. It does appear in the various horse hair close-ups that you have cited that there is a directional quality. However what is more evident is that not all horses are the same.

I think you are right in assuming that the hair sorting process would be easier to manage keeping the hair aligned as taken from the horse. It's hard to handle if you get it tangled up separating it.
