So i've done a few searches and i haven't seen any threads regarding how effects are being used... i know it depends on the type of music you play, personal taste, and a whole host of other variables- however im still curious.

Do you keep all of your pedals set at constant levels (gain, volume, tone, etc) and only change if the pedal on or off?

Do you change your settings before you play a song? (in other words do you have higher gain settings, or faster tremolo/phaser settings on different songs)

Do you change settings in the middle of a song (speed up or slow down time effects, change your level of distortion/tone while playing, increase or decrease the amount of auto wah, ect)

Well, I feel I can contribute as I have quite a small board; It would take some of the guys on here a month to describe all of what they can do! :smug:

My signal chain goes A/B input > Looper > Synth (Digitech BSW) > Chorus (Digitech BMC) > Distortion (EHX MM) > Tremolo (EHX Stereo Pulsar) > Volume (Bespeco Stereo Volume) > Back to the looper, then out.

The A/B in is so I can use 2 basses, or a bass and a keyboard, etc.

All the pedals go in the loop, it's only there if:
1. I need to go from a selection of pedals to clean very quickly (or vise-versa)
2. There's a power issue with my board and my signal is muted, I can stomp on that and carry on playing.

I use the synth for 3 things; firstly for a big dirty synth sweep for a couple of breakdowns and things with my band, secondly for a straightforward octaver, and thirdly for a kind of analogue synth sound for a couple of lines and riffs. I usually only use one of these three sounds per set, so I don't need to get down and fiddle in between songs. If I do need to change mid-set I have a rough idea of the settings memorised, so I don't need to tweak that much.

I use the chorus in conjunction with the synth to beef up the sound of the sweeps, also when I'm playing chords high up on the neck, it gives my bass a really pretty sound. :) And I also use it with my volume pedal to sound like a synth pad (this takes practice, but sounds AWESOME).

I use the distortion to play distorted lines (if I was covering Hysteria, for example) and you get this awesome dirty, gritty sound if used it with the octaver.

The tremolo is the most tweaky pedal I own, it's really versatile. Used in triangle mode, with the shape offset all the way to the right, you can get this quantised-synth sound (like you're playing impossibly fast - listen to "Flux" by Bloc Party for a good example) also I use it in triangle, with the shape in the middle, depth quite low and the rate cranked to get a more classic tremolo sound, which is useful some of the time.
A note about the depth control on this trem: if you crank the depth, you get this reverse-trem effect that is really cool, but not what you'd expect. If you look at pics of my board in the PYP thread, there's a little dot on my trem, which is to show me where the depth is actually what you'd expect "maximum" to be (where it cuts the volume to zero each time it cycles)

I use the volume with the chorus to sound like a pad, to mute my signal, and to use as a level controller, so I can really dig in at times, but not be too loud.

Most of my board is pretty "set and forget" for most things I play in. There's a load more things I could do, but don't because I haven't found uses for them in a band situation yet. My only frustration with this board is the tremolo: it's really hard to match up the tempo's with the rest of the band, I'd love it if it came with a tap, or a footswitch for a tap.

I run my whole board at unity gain, or as close to as possible.

Sorry for the long post, but that's how I use my board, pretty conscisely. :)

Hope my rambling helps!

I run a multi effect unit, and I have the ability to set up amp and cabinet modling/ effects chains/ compression/ eq/ noise suppressor scenes, so my unit is extremely useful for making 180 degree turns or radically changing my tone. Typically, use just the effects sections and run everything else clean, but i have molded the ampeg SVT and 8x10 as a distortion which was really cool in the context it was implemented. I occasionally model the Trace Elliot head and cab for their really distinctive mid cut for a slap solo, in effect, I have 6 rigs to choose form at any one time. None of them really compete with the originals, but live there is not a soul in the house that cares.

The ability to run 6 effects simultaneously as well as compression and noise suppression makes this one of my favorite tools. After 6 effects, I feel that your sound drowns in effected sound (and sometimes much earlier than 6)

AS for tweaking, I pretty much use different settings and patches to do my tweaking for me. if i want a distortion with a lot of treble, i hop to that patch, if I want a distortion with less treble, I switch patches and kick on the distortion. mostly if i want a new or original sound i have to make it at home, as it can take a while with the wealth of options i have to dial it in.

The biggest headache? volume equalization. Some patches get unreasonably loud for mysterious reasons, and if i don't remember to equalize and check,
I could blow speakers or eardrums

sounds sweet thanks. yeah id like to get an idea of how diff players use their effects. there are so many different ways one can... btw in one of my bands i cover hysteria too. i should try it with an octaver

I should mention that i use a graphic EQ pedal as well. this unit allows me to switch between two different EQ's on the fly, and holds 9 presets. I use this to start from a preset sound i like, and then tailor my signal to the room (cut boom, boost mids, whatever is needed) then I feed this signal to the effects unit I described. because I mostly just use the effects, this works well, if I had the desire to model, I would turn it off and use the multi exclusively, or put the graphic after.

I mostly just set up constant levels, but I have the foot controller for my HOG and there's a few songs we do where I switch between settings on the HOG within the same song and some where I play around with the expression pedal to fiddle with the sound. There's one song where I used two different delay time presets on my DD-20, but other than that, it's pretty much just set it and forget it.

I don't use a whole lot of stuff that's hugely tweekable (outside the HOG), but I'm gassing for a Subdecay Prometheus, so that may change real soon.

At home I sometimes press them with my fingers, but with the band I usually tread on them with my feet.

I did switch on a Metal Zone with my forehead once but that was when I was young and foolish. Back then I could undo bra straps with my teeth too. Ah, I miss those days.

Some songs my gear is constant, but for others I turn and fiddle some knobs like crazy. One of my favorite things to do is turn the reverb level up on my Holy Grail while playing. I do this a lot, so much that I "modded" the knob on it by gluing a beer cap to it to grip the rubber on my shoe better.

Also turning the dial on the Whammy is fun for all.

I very rarely adjust pedals midsong unless something is wrong. Self-oscillating delay is the one exception but even that is a pretty rare thing. I do make pretty frequent use of an expression pedal with my Moog LPF if that counts.

I use a crybaby wah for the Nuge's Stranglehold, and distortion for the intro to For Whom The Bell Tolls.

Cool if you think that sounds best, but you know that was a phaser on the original right?

That's a brilliant idea. :)
