How Do You View The Spector Name??

Ive thought about this before but, Im a little bias because I own a couple Euros so, I dont think I can answer.

How do you view the Spector name. By that I mean, you have the high end basses, Fodera, Warrior and Sadowskys and those type basses. Then youve got your lower ends like Dean, Schecter and Epiphones. (Dont blaze me..Ive got a Dean too.)

But, outta these companies, Spector actually makes basses on all these levels. You can go from $200 to $2000 easily. And yeah, they did sell Spectors at GC for awhile so they were easily accessible but, now thats over so. I think alot of folks grade a bass by how accessible it is. The more accessible, the less graded.

So, how do you see the Spector name "as a whole"....high end, low end or average? And dont say, it depends on what bass you get, Im just talking the name and rep in general.

Putting my bias aside, I think think the Spector name is held in high regard since every class of instrument they produce is of really good quality. Unlike, say B.C Rich for example, Stuart has made a great effort in bringing inexpensive instruments to the market place without sacrificing quality. He's also stood the test of time with the NS design which is still going strong and shows no signs of slowing.

Now I own two (and have owned 4 different ones total) and my impression is even better of them. They are truly nice instruments.

That depends on which Spector name we are talking about.

Stuart Spector?

Good solid basses. Not what I would consider boutique, but definitely high quality and with a distinctive sound.

Phil Spector?

Good producer. Crazy Hair. Possible murderer.

I tend to put them in the same box as Schecter. Good instruments, not my sort of thing but even the lower priced models feel like you're holding an expensive instrument to me.

I hold them in high regard. They fill a strange niche. I kind of think of Spector as a boutique bass company that also offers mass produced lower and middle range basses.

Very good company-top models up there with Pedulla, MTD, etc. and good value at low and mid price points as well. Not my thing, though.

Aesthetically, I think they're complete snoozers--they barely even register in my mind when I see them in a store.

LOL That slayed me. I can't stop laughing.

I have always looked at them a very nice instruments but they do nothing for me. My daughter really liked them for a while but I could never get myself to like them. They just had no "mojo" for me.

They always felt like they were put together really well. Fit & finish was always good on them. I never played a U.S. made Spector but the Korean and European ones I played felt solid and played nice. They just had no Mojo.

Killer basses.
Affordable enough to get the good stuff w/out worrying about it being just a "collectible" and not taking it to your bar gig, but much nicer than most in their price range.
I see them as an upper mid-class setup, kinda like Modulus.

That's an interesting view. Many think the US and Euros are too flashy. What do you consider aesthetically pleasing?

I view the Spector name in very high regard. They are among the best basses in the world. IMO
a snoozer in the looks department? I think they are very dazzling. Flamed/quilt maple with those beautiful abalone crown inlays....mmmmm...delicious!
Not to mention they're amazing players.

i used to like spectors but as i learned more about building basses i've gotten turned off a bit. I started looking closer at instruments build quality and found spectors lacking. The bridges were off center, they dont balance and the reach to the 1st fret is huge. I think people like them because they look flashy and different and ill admit they sound good but if you look closer at the details of many, not all, of their instruments you'll see flaws.

Heck, I think that fingerboard is what originally caught my eye. There are few guitars that can be identified with only a photo of the fretboard. Spector is one of them. But, I can understand where the Spectors without that inlay could be defined as sleepers. Some of the US made ones, w/o the inlay look kinda drab.

Anyway, Im getting off topic. Im digging everyones opinion. We should try this with other brands.

I'm not sure I'd buy into that 100 percent. GC sells Music Man, and the overall take on those seems to be great basses, great value.

Spector is one of those "I keep forgetting about those" basses for me. I had an urge to try one when Kasim Sulton was playing them (great, underrated bassist) and then he stopped and I forgot.

I wouldn't mind trying one, but not if the reach to the first fret is how it's been described. When you're me, that first fret is VERY important!
