How Important is it to Have a Website?

Just curious as to the opinions amongst my talkbass brethren how important is it to have a website? Now in the digital age it seems to me it's kinda important. Especially if you have product to sell!
I'm still getting this project off the ground, practices are few because families and scheduling and such. Then my violin player developed tendonitis that we're finally getting past.
But in the slow times I've been getting a website together. You know, get SOMETHING done. It will be nice to have it all together for when we do get out. To refer people to.
Don't have nothing suitable recorded yet, or anything to sell as of yet, but I thought it best to get one started.
And I'm no web developer or anything either lol, this is all new to me pretty much. Using Bandzoogle, it's not to hard. The address is
Jacqueserics.com if anyone wants to give it a look and tell me how I'm doing!

I think that having a dedicated website is critical. Contrary to popular opinion, not everyone on the planet lives on social media. I know of at least two local bands whose online presence consists of social media accounts only. Consequently, I never hear anything about them. :wacky:

I think the Bandzoogle site is fine, especially since you have a dedicated URL. As with any site, content is king, so be sure to commit to adding stuff as soon as it becomes available.

It seems like any more most organizations that have events do it with a Facebook page you could have a regular web page for reference and Link it to your Facebook page then update it regularly on Facebook probably easier than updating your web page all the time.

They are cheap and easy to maintain, so yes for all the reasons above. Depending on your band, audience and market, you may also want to have lots of social media presence - facebook for the oldies and instagram for the young folks at a bare minimum.

Just a thought - your band is named The Jacque Erics, but your webaddress calls you The Jacques Erics. Which is it? They should definitely be the same. If your webaddress is fixed, methinks you gotta change your name to match asap... :D

Ha ha! Wondered if anyone would notice that. My name is Jacque, without the silent 'S' at the end that some people use. For the web address I was faced with a dilemma. In small case letters, all run together, one word jumps out at you. Right there in the middle! Take a look for yourself.

Yeah, that's a bit much.
Sooooo, to mitigate that eventuality, I decided to add the s on the address and break it up.
Any web search of one will prob turn up the other as well.

Interesting - you didn't go for the hyphen approach? jacque-eric.com? (It's been done - experts-exchange.com is a good example of something like this.)

Think the site's fine - definitely better to have something than nothing.

A bit of constructive criticism - I don't think the counters on the pages are necessary; I think they're a dated concept (very 1996) and it doesn't look great if you've only had 7 views. I think removing those from each page will have a positive effect on your site and your traffic.

My personal domain has a hyphen, and it's an utter pig to communicate to people: "sorry, was that a slash, a hyphen, a dash or an underscore?" And that's with verbal communication, before you try writing it down on unlined paper...

I'm still confused by the confusion between a slash and a dash, but I often run into dialect issues, so I put it down to one of those.

About the counters, I was thinking the same thing as you are. I am going to remove them.
Just put them on there to get quick input on visitor numbers with nothing driving traffic to site.

Less important than it used to be, but always a plus if you're trying to attract clients. No downside to it, unless your site sucks, is out of date, etc. but a decent site, combined with a good FB page with current pics & vids? It can really help.

Having our FB DOES bring people out - how else they going to find out about shows?

oh and in terms of joining a band? I discount any band immediately that doesn't have a FB and/or good website so I can see them and what they are all about.

Yeah, .....I'm one of the handful of people I know that pretty much despises Facebook. Homey don't play that. But my guitarist is all about it. I figure he can cover Facebook coverage on his page.
We played an open mic a few weeks back as a duo, (no violin player), and he told me, "yeah man, about 30 people said they'd come check it out on my Facebook page!". None of these people actually showed up.

whether folks 'like it or not' a website + social media presence = just the way things are done these days. there may be places/markets in which those tricks aren't all that helpful, but there are more where it is helpful, or expected.

OP: good job on your website! we should check it out as it matures and develops. good luck! :thumbsup:

Thanks so much! I'm doing my best with it. Like I said, I'm no web designer.
But I do have a degree in Fine Arts and a background in advertising, so that helps.

you're doing fine! my band refers all kinds of folks (buyers!) to the website = it helps them make decisions! your band will never be hired by anyone unless someone makes a decision!

having some music/youtube links will help your 'commerce' in the future. ;)

I think expertsexchange.com is a MUCH better URL. They'd probably get a LOT more hits. :chicken:
