how long can flatwounds last for?

You are right - sound preferences are subjective.
IME, "dead" is a relative term when it comes to the sounds bass strings make - especially flats.
well i did have my strings on almost a year for now. i think i can play with them alittle longer. after all. there still good strings to me 
For me so far, Chromes: 8 years. TIs, 9 years. And the oddest thing is that both sets can be fairly bright sounding...can even slap the TIs!

I had to put a new set of D'Addario flats on my Epiphone. The old ones had been on there for at least 3 years. I can't WAIT for them to age, because the old set sounded so GOOD. Seriously, when I started playing on the new set, I nearly panicked because I was so used to the sound of the "aged" strings. The older they get, the better they sound, IMNSHO.

Ha ha, that's about the only reason to change a flat, but then again, I bet most people put the old ones back on.
On the other hand I used rounds on my fender p when I got it in 07 and I first changed the strings, only because one broke, a few months ago
I have been using the same set of string ever since I started playing 12 years ago. I think they are getting better with age.
Just buy top quality flats, my Thomastik-Infeld flats have been on since 2005 and are getting better...
