How long does it take for D'Addario Chrome flatwounds to rust?

I wanted to know this because I just got new strings and the roundwounds that my bass came with rusted in about 2 months. I've had the chrome flats for a couple months now and they still aren't showing any signs of rusting.

I've had one pair going for 2 years on my Jazz bass. So far, they still sound as good as day one, but who knows? Maybe I lucked out or I happen to have the perfect humidity balance or something.

Too many variables at play to tell you any kind of useful answer. The climate you live in, the amount you play, the clamminess of your hands, and the acidity of your sweat will all factor into it. Personally I've been playing for 16 years, generally at least 1-2 gigs a week, and I've never had a set of strings rust. Rounds will last me 2-6 months, flats 6 to 18 months on my daily-use bass.

I'm a builder and I've been using D'Addario Chromes on all of my basses for about 15 years. I don't think I've ever seen a set of Chromes get rusty. I've got sets on basses that I have stored away which are more than 15 years old, and they still sound and feel pretty good. I just did a rehearsal tonight with a bass I built in 2000, and it still has the original Chromes on it. Most of my customers' basses still have the original strings on them.

They will start getting somewhat deader sounding over the years. If that sound is okay with you (I like it, on most of my basses), then the Chromes will pretty much last forever, unless you damage them. I occasionally will have an older string (usually an A) where the outer wrap gets nicked and broken. That's about the only time I replace a set of Chromes.

However, I am in southern California, where it's hot and relatively dry.
