How many of us use no effects?

Effects in the hands of a novice are not the same as in the hands of someone that can use them to their fullest.

Sometimes, IMO, adding a little smidge of this or that can make a HUGE difference in the way that a line will come across.

Still, I use none on stage. If the house guy wants to add some, that's pretty much up to him. I prefer to keep it simple and smoke my parts ... sometimes that's enough to get along with.

I love incompetent bass players with loads of FX. Most of my repair work comes from the results of what their Fx and their impaired judgement has done to their bass rigs.

Sour grapes? Some people have a talent for sonic alchemy, like the aforementioned Adrian Belew. It took me 25 years to really get a handle on my signal chain. I realized I like a super clean transparent amp and a few pedals to get the tones I'm hearing in my head. So, I could say I don't like amps really. You can have your SVT, I'll keep my Blueberry because it has true bypass.
Oh, and the exact same rig works great for my guitar.

I use a dual guitar/bass board, too. And trust me, people, he's right when he suggests that using a pedalboard full of effects tastefully in order to enhance compositions is an art unto itself. I'm much more comfortable doing this as a guitarist, to be honest. But I've only been seriously tackling bass for about 6 months now.

I have got a good few effects pedals but never really take them out to gigs much. recently i bought a sansamp bass driver/di and i love it! so i take this with me all the time now.

I just don't like having to keep track of a bunch of knobs while I am playing.
It's a HUGE distraction for me.
I even bypass the preamp on my amp in favor of a simple Class "A" preamp that only has 1 knob..(Gain).
I fired a guitard once for fiddling with knobs constantly on stage. He missed cues and always had his back to the audience or looking at the floorbecause of them.

As many have already stated here, I can produce all the "sounds" I need to play by adjusting the bass itself or the way I play it.
I too have experimented with pedals & the VAmp and found them more frustrating than helpful. For my style - dry is the only way.

I have a project that I utilise a small board with, and another band where all I'll use between my bass and amp is a tuner, a DI, and maybe some eq and a filter. I rarely, if ever, use nothing at all. Not long ago, my fx board was huge, but mangeable. Then one day I downsized to what is essential to the project, and became much happier.
