how many types of bass are there?

I started with a ESP Ltd B-50 P-J Bass few years back. played in the church. Poor, never really question about this topic.

Then, one day, I got some money, and got a Ibanez Prestige SR4005E. My eyes were opened...

As some big guy said, the more we see the less we know. Now I am confused. just how many types of basses are there? and where does my new bloody expensive Prestige SR4005e stands?

I search through the forum, there are few posts about ibanez prestige..

After all, did I get the right bass for myself? I like its tone, but is there more to explore?

There must be 50 common brands of basses and each has 10-30 models, and then there are the older models, so don't even start with going gear crazy - it can be your downfall!

You have a very nice bass - be happy with it and you will save yourself a lot of frustration.

Single P, double P, double J, PJ, swingle humbucker, double humbucker, himbucker and J, humbucker & P. single soapbar, double soapbar, soapbar and humbucker, soapbar & J, soapbar & P. So 13 main types for one and 2 pup basses. Add in all variations possible for 3 pup bass since there are a few of those around. Double the end figure for passive and active versions.

Thanks for all the answers. I am not trying to start a fight about brands or any sort, but I do want to know a bit more, as this is the only place I could find some experienced people to tell me about the skies outside of mountains.
what is so special about Fender Pbass? is it a precision bass? when say copying, you meant copy the exterior look? or the pick ups? Or the tone? I know there are also warwick and some private ones like VR(made in Canada) and more. I
Isn't warwick a nice bass too?

and what type of bass is my prestige then? is it a P or J?

Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich...

Thank you! that's something I am looking for! I see, so humbucker is parallel with P and J. So my SR4005E is a double Humbucker then?

The first electric bass was invented by Leo Fender. He called it a Precision Bass because it had frets. It was impossible to play an out of tune note. Up until then, it was all double basses that didn't have frets, if you played the note slightly off it was out of tune (which is a whole other discussion).

Every electric bass owes it heritage to Leo Fender's Precision Bass.
