depends. i find strings go dead faster on my 28.6" scale basses (mikros, mini P), so i change those strings every 6 to 12 months - basically when they thud. i don't actually like new string sound, but there's a difference between warm, less brassy tone and dead and dull. long scale basses can last 12 months or more, mostly to 18 or 24 months.

i once had some boomers on a long scale bass that lasted over 5 years before they finally died.
