How the hell do you use a Boss ME20b

You post the ad on Talkbass, or craigslist. Ebay is too much hassle.

You get chewed down to $175, and take it.

You call musiciansfriend, ask for 10% off, and get a zoom b3 for $180.

You come back to talkbass and start a thread, "How the hell do I use a Zoom B3"....



Actually, the zoom is pretty user friendly. I suck with effects, and I mean suck bad... but I figured this out without the manual. It's pretty intuitive.

Did anyone else struggle?

Yes. I did. I was just as dumb. Got rid of it immediately. A brand new one, on top of that. Drove me nuts...didn't sound that good, on top of everything else.

Ok - the ME20B has a different layout than the ME25, but the good news is that the 20b looks easier:

You see the grid - buttons on right side, knobs on bottom. Click the first button on the row labeled SFX. The first knob all the way to the left will control the "type". You can see the number for each Type listed below by the foot switches.

Turning that first knob to "5" would give you the "Octave" effect. The next knobs adjust the sensitivity, tone, and level.

Pressing the button on the right for the next row controls the Comp/Drive. Same idea.

Once you are done you can press "Write" and save it to a memory setting. The instruction manual should explain how.

There's also EZ Edit buttons that are assigned to those same knobs - not sure how they work. I'd have to play with them. Probably changes the "type" of each effect but not the sensitivity or level. Just a quick way to go through the types without programming "line by line".

You should be able to turn on/off each type of effect in manual mode with the foot switches, or scroll through the factory and user presets while not in manual mode.

Built in tuner - you might need to hold down the first pedal for a few seconds. Again, user manual should be able to explain.


What issues are you having / trying to figure out? Sometimes the more "basic" models have just as many features crammed in but triple assign functions of a knob and are actually tougher to figure out.

I've used that pedal for years.

It's advantage over the Zoom, is its ability to be used as single pedals. I have patches and banks saved, but if you aren't there yet, then operate it as a 3 pedal board for the time being until you get a feel for it.

Just wanted to echo fuzzychaos and make the point not everyone learns or assimilates information in the same way. Some are readers, doers, listeners or watchers. I don't understand why waste your time and the op's just to snipe. It is better to be silent and thought a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt.

I've never used this pedal and have nothing to offer in terms of advice on it, but as a longtime member of this forum, I feel bad that you're so discouraged by the responses you've gotten that make you comment that you're going to leave.

In my experience, there are a LOT of helpful folks on TB, and there are always going to be those people who click on a thread and then act like you wasted their time by forcing them to read your question - these people can't be avoided completely no matter where you hang out on the Internet. All I can recommend is that you push through those sorts of replies and hold out for the good stuff. Eventually you'll find someone willing to help you. Have faith, fellow TBer.

I think I will hang out a bit longer all though I got some people just spilling negativity I actually got a lot more people willing to offer useful advice mostly everyone on TB seems awesome and here for the love of bass which is a great thing to be involved in. Thanks for your reply

Why do you need to butt in again you are one of the people who started all this, like you say it had all calmed down but people like you just can't help saying something else. Childishgambino was name calling as well so dont just single me out I would appreciate if we can just leave it here cause we have all wasted to much time on it.

After a couple of months of research and reading, this is the exact reason i went with the ME80 instead of any other multi pedal. It's the closest you can get to individual pedals and still have a multi. and it's so easy to save or modify a patch. I actually did one right away for use with my bass (ME50b coming soon for my bass) so I can use it for the volume and some eq and and preamp. I almost went with the Zoom G3 till I saw a factory demo on YouTube and about 2/3 into the video the guy missed the stomp switch a little bit and his foot broke off a knob right above it. All the rest of the video all I could focus on was that know twiddling aound like a thimble on a match stick. I also wondered that it's was only like a 10 minute video, why didn't they just grab another one an redo the video?

I guess for the original topic at hand it may not help but hey it's conversation about this stuff and not badgering. Keep with it, you'll figure it out.
