How to Get a Tan?

I never heard of anyone not being able to tan before. I heard of people burning, but not tanning - never heard of nothing happening though.

Try some tanning oils... they used to make tons of them, now I think they're a little harder to find. I think anything with over SPF 8 is going to just make it harder to tan. I'm Italian. I tan when I turn the stove on. I go running 3 days a week, put SPF 8 on all the time - and I'm darker than I'd like to be.

Not sure what all the hype about a tan is these days. I don't mind a bit of color, but I completely don't understand the sunworshipper menatality. After age 30 a lot of thems people start looking really bad.

Some people will tan really well and others just won't have much happen. One of my good friends has a fair bit of irish in him and he can't tan to save his life. And if he does it takes forever. This is especially bad when he ends up with a nice farmers tan. I on the other hand will be noticeably darker after just an hour in the sun. 8 hours in the day and I can go from being super pale to another ethnicity.

There are parts of my body that DO than, and there are parts (like the underside of the arm, and the back of my hand, and the outerside of my legs) that don't tan or burn...

I had to grab it off the shelf. :p

Neutrogena, "build-a-Tan"

It's a mild, gradual type.
I didn't want to go from albino to super tan overnight. :D
Supposedly it can be reapplied to get darker.

Seems to work okay.

But that only lasts like... 3 days at most... I mean, you could use it a day before prom or going to a party, but I can't imagine having to apply something every 3 days, must take a lot of determination!

I don't know, it seems to last a little bit longer than three days. Again, I only use it on my legs, so it take only a couple of minutes to apply. I only put it on over the weekend as well. I could see it being a pain to use if you wanted to do your back and chest. It would probably take some time to put it on evenly, plus it take about 15-20 minutes for it to dry, which means you can't put a shirt on. I don't do that, it would mess up my almost perfect farmers tan. :D

If you want a real tan spend more time in the sun. Just know your limitations and don't over do it.

Genetics works well, when it works at all. It's also quite unfair. I'm the only person in my immediate family who tans well, and in the spring, I still have a farmer's tan from the previous summer. Any skin that doesn't get any sun stay completely white (think scandinavian), but my arms and nose (not the rest of my face, I've got metalhead hair blocking that from the sun) are dark enough to challenge my ethnicity.

I blame the 1/4 slavic blood I have. The rest's Mennonite stock, which is rather white (low countries/switzerland, plus centuries of being pushed from country to country, as far as I can tell).

and for context, I live in Canada, but even when I'm on vacation in mexico, I completely shun sunscreen. having a tan, if you can get one, works better, and you don't need chemicals to do it.

It depends on your heritage and your skin tone. My sister and I are both a quarter Italian, but she inherited the dark, Italian "olive"' skin and I didn't. I'm by no means pale, but her skin is much darker than mine and she tans more easily than I do.

This is basically my sister and me. We're 3/4 Irish, 1/8 Russian/Ukrainian, and 1/8 Choctaw.

For reasons I don't understand, Angie looks Mexican and I look Irish. My dad produced a son and then a daughter by each of two wives. Mike and I look alike. Kelly and Angie look alike. But the boys and girls don't look related to each other.

Angie can see a sunny day on TV and turn brown right before your eyes. I get what the family calls the Irish tan. THat's when you turm dark red. Then all your skin falls off. Then you're pale white again. Right now I'm the most tan I've been in decades. Parts of my forearms are only medium white, with little lighter spots that I call 'anti-freckles'. Those are new. And unfortunately they are areas of greater likelihood to get skin cancer. But with the comparatively dark forearms, I'm now as tan as Jim Gaffigan. For me that's tan.

*heavy heavy sigh*

I'm a pale Irish boy. ^ see the username. I do my best to avoid the sun. Three of my grandparents have had multiple skin cancers. My mother has had 2. My father... 47 and counting. He has a plastic ear to replace the one cancer stole.

Please be careful. Know your family history. I come from a family that has a history of cancer anyway, AND I have my fair, freckled, blue-eyed Irish complexion. I can't be careful enough. Skin cancer is a likely thing in my future, it's up to me, now, how big a deal it will be.

I'm Scottish and Irish. My arms, face and neck are always tan, the rest of my body is pretty much always white. I was a referee for a season for football (soccer) and my knees got tan over time. I had a funny tan line though since the socks came up to my knee and i was wearing shorts. I tan very slowly.

This last week I took jr. high students to camp in Ventura county and fell asleep in a beach chair for 2 hours. Suffice to say, I'm quite burned right now and peeling everywhere. I go back again tomorrow for another week at camp, but I'm avoiding the sun like the bubonic plague.

So the irish tan referee stripes on their skin? :eyebrow: Man, over here we just wear black and white striped shirts, give 'em a whistle, and a pair of glasses. ;)
