How to get double bass tone on electric?

Ashbory basses are great also for upright sounds. People might laugh that your bass looks like a toy, but the sound will shut them up.

+1,000,000 on the Ashbory basses. First time I saw one I thought it was a kid's toy. Then I heard it in action. It's a serious tool for creating deadly serious woody double-bass sound. Honestly, the sound from an Ashbory cannot be argued with. Check it out.

Start with a fretless bass. Flatwound or tapewound strings. Foam mute under the strings. Play near the neck. Play open strings whenever possible. Dial in the tone as needed. Play simple bass lines.

This is largely what I do. Gets pretty close.

i recently bought a Godin A4 Ultra fretless.

Not what you want to hear, but whether it be bluegrass, oldies, rock-a-billy, swing, bebop, salsa (all of which I've played on upright and electric), it is the articulation, lines, touch, rhythmic feel, harmonic concept, melodic vocabulary, and dynamic sensitivity that says "upright." Style matters way more than tone. All IMHO.
