How to get started?

I've ben playing the bass for over two years now (and over 6 of piano) and i'm twenty two years old and I am now comfortable enough with my playing to start becoming a serious musician/writer. Where should I start though? I've only been in one band with friends that I was really into but that didn't go much of anywhere because my mates were not as committed as I was. I just have a bunch of ideas and things I want to do with my music I just need a way to start putting it together with people. So whats the best way to meet serious, like-minded musicians? I've been doing alot of self recording with Cubase and have alot of stuff but its mostly ideas not finished product. I'd much rather play with people and develop music with other people. There is only one open mic in my area im aware of. Any thoughts on good ways to network?
