How to simplify a complicated bass line?

I think it is most important to get the spirit of the part. Listen to where the notes land in relation to the bass drum. Of course, you don't want to play something that changes the entire feel of the song, but you probably already knew that.

When I have to play songs with fairly busy or non-repetitive bass lines, I try to learn a few of the licks and then just improvise around them. As I seem to remember, the end of that song gets kind of noodley. Depending on how many pieces your band is, it might be cool to get the flavor of the horn parts if no one else is covering them already.
