How use delay with bass (and why)

I think my biggest problem is committing to the use of delay. I usually don't want to write my bass lines around certain effect. I can live without any of them, but with delay I imagine it would be very crucial for the bass line. If it wouldn't be then what's the point, right?

Before I knew there was delay on that Crimson track I learned it without. There is nothing wrong with writing a line around an effect as long as the effect you are using is fairly common and reliable. I've noticed how certain effects change the way that I play. For example if I am using an envelope filter I have a tendency to lay back a little and play slinkier to let the effect do it's job. Whereas when I used distortion I had the tendency to play more on the front of the beat. With delay I usually use a little more space and let it breathe a little.

I love a fast or medium delay on solos. The joke sometimes is that a bass solo is when people take a bathroom break, and one reason is because I think a basic clean bass tone on a lead is not that exciting to hear multiple times throughout a gig. Adding some subtle delay can really give the tone a lot of fatness and add interest. I run delay second to last in the chain before a barely on OD that I use as a compressor.

Well, I've done it again. I just gone done bought me another delay. MXR Carbon Copy. Traded my only reverb plus some money for it. I've really wanted to try Carbon Copy, but they don't seem to lose their value (which is a good thing for me, now).
Somebody posted earlier a video of Andrea Brink (maybe?) playing with different delay settings. I really loved the one bassline with short delay on the verge of self-oscillating. Digital delay doesn't go there, so maybe I'll get that with CC.
