How would an elk bone body sound?

The wood in most of our basses was once alive, somewhat like the aforementioned bone. The plastic, by a slight stretch, was once dinosaurs. BFD.
And I would not suggest offing a whale for a bass, but if I came across a beached whale bone large enough to harvest as a neck or w/e, I'd bring it home & PM the OP. EIEIO

Actually most petroleum is from the Carboniferous Period, before the dinosaurs. And most of it's probably from plant matter.

I think it would sound rather harsh and clanky. Bone is an extremely hard substance, so I'm thinking you'd be sacrificing warmth.

Some people like clanky sounding basses. Some are already made almost entirely out of very hard types of wood.

A friend and i are thinking of building a bass, we have the materials to shape the bones, but does anyone know how well bone resonates? I know we could make one out of wood, but we gotta be unique. I was going to purchase a neck to go along with it, and i still have yet to decide on pickups, but does anyone have any input on the subject?

On a more serious note, I think you'd have a greater chance of success if you considered a body of tonewood with an elk-bone top. It might even look decent if you could get some spalted elk.

Spalted elk bones are pretty hard to find. I know for myself, most of the meat bones I get end up, er, 'flamed'...

Since you haven't picked a neck out yet, may I suggest giraffe?

Just get one single Giraffe femur and you could carve an entire EUB out of it. "A hunting we will go..."
