45 years of riding motorcycles gives me this perspective on old bikes:
If you must buy an older bike out of necessity you cannot go wrong with an older Honda.
They were built almost bulletproof and if adult ridden and maintained they will last just about
forever.
anything else will be a headache to maintain, especially the European bikes, unless you can find a late 80's or early 90's aircooled BMW, which is another bike you can ride forever.
I know a guy who's dad still rides his originally purchased 60's era Honda CB350 to work everyday.
It's a gold and white classic with almost 50 years of commuting behind it. Regular maintenance = Tires, oil, occasional cable replacement, plugs, chain...the usual stuff.
