HX Stomp as an IEM Rig routing?

Is anyone using the HX Stomp as an IEM rig? I recently discovered you could use it as a wired IEM rig but I'm having a little bit of trouble with the hookup / routing. I've watched a couple of videos with this setup on the Helix but I'm still a confused how it translates to the HX Stomp.

From what I understand...
  • IEM signal comes from headphone output.
  • Volume control set to phones.
  • Global Settings > Ins/Outs - set Return Type to Aux In.
  • Monitor feed from mixer plugged into Return/Aux In on the side.
What I don't understand...
  • Do I have to use the send output on the side or can I still use the Main Output jack on the back to send my signal to the board?
  • Do I have to use a block at the end of my signal path? If so which one and how do I keep the monitor mix from feeding back into my signal to the board?
  • Global Settings > Ins/Outs > Phones Monitor...what does the Sends option do?

You will use a send block for block 7 as your output to FOH or amp and the return block as block 8 to take in the mix from the board. Use the mix parameter on the return block to control the balance of monitor mix vs your signal you hear in the headphone output. You will lose the main out as it will have the mix in it.

Ok so SEND is now my output to the board and I need dedicate 2 blocks (send and return) at the end of my signal chain.

I'm not a fan of dedicating 2 blocks in my chain. I think I only have one space available. That being said, I'll try it out and see how it compares to my current wired pack. Either way it's nice to have a backup option.

Thanks for the info.

Do you have to put that send/return block in every patch, or can this be done in Global Settings? I am still debating going to an HXS for my everything. I don't use a lot of effects or see myself using more than one good amp setting I like (that could change I suppose) so it's a little overkill, but the potential to bring just one thing to gigs in my gig bag is pretty tempting.

Right now I have a separate IEM box but if it's not a huge deal, having my IEM's run through the HXS would really make it an all in one.

It may or may not be a deal breaker. I use a Nano board right now for my Tuner, Rolls PM50s (for my wired IEM's) and then there are a couple Empress pedals and I send that to my REDDI. The HXS would fit on the Nano with my tuner and Rolls. That would still be very small and portable, and let me have 3 switches on the HXS if I keep my tuner pedal. Maybe not a bad option. Then I don't have to worry about using a block or whatever for IEM routing. IDK.

It’s definitely a cool unit and I don’t use it to its full capabilities. I basically use an amp sim, HPF and phaser. I have a few different patches of the same settings but with a different amp or OD pedal for certain songs.

The last thing for me is if I can either make or buy (I think Ian Allison is going to be making some of his patches available including synths) a few good synth patches, I could eliminate taking a synth to gigs. That would be awesome. While I know that nothing really sounds like a synth, and playing multiple instruments is always good for growth, I just don't love playing keys. I'm a bass player.

The synth sounds are probably the least desirable out of all the effects.

True. But Ian gets some pretty sweet sounds so we'll see. Most of the rest of the band likes me using a synth, for sound and visual, and it is the best sonic option, I just don't like experimenting/editing as much on it to find sounds I can use.

Every block. The connections are not coming out of the main out l/r so without the return part of the block you won't hear anything.

The convenience of having one box might be outweighed by that. If I go this way, I think I'd keep my Rolls for my IEM's and then keep my tuner so I can have 3 foot switched available on the HXS and put all 3 on my Nano and call it good.

Well, I convinced my son (13) he should just use his Xmas money etc to get a Pod Go instead of a bunch of pedals and power supply and board and all that. Save a lot of money. He tried one last Saturday and loved it. We found a used one he could afford and it arrived today.

After hearing the presets and convincing him it was the way to go, I think I’m going to take the plunge and do it as well. I listed my REDDI today. I’ll probably list my Empress stuff as well.

Now to decide if I:
1) want a Stomp and use my Nano with my tuner and Rolls and have 3 foot switches available or
2) go XL and lose the Nano and tuner and use the Rolls just loose with the XL as my tuner or
3) go XL only, lose/use a block in every patch to do the IEM routing thing and have one pedal for everything.

I like the mode switch on the Pod Go to switch modes.

Thoughts?

The Stomp and XL have more processing power than the Pod Go. The Stomp and XL have the same amount of processing power so either will work. I use mine in stomp box mode so I built a box with 2 momentary switches to change presets. If I had to do it again I'd probably go with the XL for the extra integrated footswitches. It takes up more space but I wouldn't need an extra tuner, which I use to free up a footswitch on the Stomp. i also like how all the inputs and outputs on the XL are located on one side vs. 3 sides on the Stomp. Here's a pic of my current setup. From right to left, tuner, compressor, external footswitches, Stomp, Behringer P2, Walrus Audio Canvas.

It seems dumb to get a Stomp knowing you’ll need to get extra switches. I do like the stuff all on one side on the XL. I also like the screen on the Pod - my old eyes do anyway. Not sure how much power I need. I’m using the SVT4 preset 27C for church and it sounds good. Not using parallel signals or anything. Do I really need all that power? IDK.

I bought mine used. Now that I've used it for a while, I like the layout of the XL better. That being said the XL is $100 more and takes up more real estate on your board. You can build or buy an external footswitch like the one I have for around $25. Each unit has 120 + patches and I only use 3. :roflmao:

That being said I don't see getting rid of it. If I ever go back to using individual pedals I'll still keep it in my bag as a backup. I currently have a Sansamp VT DI and MXR Phaser in my bag in case the stomp goes down during a show.
