I just heard that the website bleepingcomputer.com is being sued by the company Enigma over a review of one of enigmas "products": the very controversial spy hunter antivirus. How the $$$$ did this country get so messed up that a person or company can't state an opinion about a product without fear of a multimillion dollar lawsuit? Even though this lawsuit will certainly be unsuccessful for Enigma, that is completely ridiculous that bleepingcomputer will have to pay up to millions in legal fees to defend their constitutional right to free speech. Lawsuits regarding the speech / expression of someone or some entity should not considered period.

Yeah. All of that.

My wife is a physician. She has a gajillion dollars worth of malpractice insurance. And then her accountant told her to get a.million dollar umbrella just in case. Being that my wife is "rich" she has a target on her back.

I am disgusted by the fact the The Suits chose to pay for two dozen AA players...and then fired Fredi Gonzalez 6 weeks into a season that, EVERYONE KNEW GOING IN, was a 100-loss season. He was a 'dead man walking' back in February!
Like a lot... maybe even most adults, I've been fired.
I always kept an eye on 'the bridges' on my way out the door.
Now...retired...I'm reminded of that feeling...and it ain't good. :banghead:

Bleepingcomputer is being sued? That's a huge shame. I have no doubt they'll win the lawsuit, hopefully they will win so hard, they'll be off the hook for legal fees.

No. But several of her friends have. And one doc she went to med school with paid a settlement at the advice of his attorney. We were at a reunion event and he told the story.

Literally the patient's mother made up a story. The mother's attorney upon hearing the doc's side said simply "Look, you're probably right. But you have deep pockets. The judge is gonna see you as the big bad rich doctor and that family as the victim. You may as well make us an offer to go away."

Right now there is a law suit against the owner of the theater in Colorado that got shot up. The law suit contends that the company that runs the theater "should have known that a late night showing of the movie could have led to violence and should have taken precautions."

McDonald's has paid out tons of money because they served (dare I even say it) HOT COFFEE.

Color me unimpressed.

The point is, the accountant doesn't sell umbrella policies. She had no vested interest in offering that advice. She is simply aware of our litigious society and has seen it enough times to know. Does that fact that my wife hasn't lost everything in a frivolous law suit dilute the point really?

Ah, the ol' "hot coffee" trope. Look, I'm as much in favor of "common sense" as you are, but it sounds to me like you are once again projecting outrage about something that you imagine might happen to you.

Actually, the lawsuit @two fingers is talking about actually happened. What is less common knowledge is that the woman who sued had second and third degree burns on her thighs and genitals, which means that the coffee had to be over 205 degrees Fahrenheit. Also, the McDonald's that served her that coffee had been cited by the local health department several times before for serving coffee that was well above the 197 degree maximum for hot beverages.

You and I seem to know what's up with the facts of that suit. Frankly, I am completely amazed that anyone would be willfully ignorant enough to roll out "hot coffee" as an example of a frivolous grifter lawsuit when the details of the case are so well documented here in 2016. If I recall correctly, McDonalds had something like 700 separate incidents of people receiving second or third-degree burns from the coffee before the lawsuit occurred.

Well, I'll admit that I've held a McDonald's coffee cup that way once or twice, and I don't think I'm an idiot... The major point of the lawsuit was that a non-screwed-with Bunn coffee maker brews coffee at about 195 degrees. We have one of them at work; I've tested it with a calibrated laboratory thermometer. Liquid spilled on you at that temperature is startling, unpleasant, and embarassing - but it doesn't give you second and third degree burns. Liquid at over 205 does. Which is why Bunn set the machine to 195 or so at the factory. That McDonalds screwed with it to make the coffee hotter, so it would stay that way longer. Which is why they got sued - and lost. And I seriously doubt that that was the only McDonalds that did it, either; I've gotten some ridiculously hot coffee from some of them in my travels...;)

You're right. You're not an idiot and maybe she's not either, but it's an idiotic thing to do. I don't know how that figures into litigation but sometimes people are asking for it when they make bad decisions.
