I don't get buying used strings!

No need to project. There was nothing to misread in your plain statement. I'm not offended in the least. It's just kind of like the time my friend's kid told me he didn't get why people bend the brims of their baseball caps. I told him that if everyone who did that knew it, they would probably all stop doing it. :D I'm sure you got the message long before my belated post ;)

Ha ! I used to work in a music store. You haven't lived spend your day smelling the sour stench of decaying dna on instruments that have been handled by the previous owner as well as every greasy handed kid that just came in with McKetchup on his hands, sneeze spray or years of stale after shave . It's good for your immune system.

You'd have thought I'd have learned my lesson when I asked about the near endless sub genres of metal but no; I had to go and open a topic explaining how I've never experienced neck dive and wondering if it's really a thing or is it just a "thing" thing. I may be slow on the uptake at times, but I'll never again ask why... here at TB without a compelling defensible reason for doing so. Not to mention I have no more cheeks to sacrifice to the gods of idle curiosity. :D

That's interesting. Looks like they would prefer you to send strings directly to one of their overseas partners, but instead of me sending used strings overseas at whatever postage cost, I wonder if they would be able to purchase 3-4 packs of strings locally? The problem is that strings have low residual value and shipping costs are still high, relatively. Kudos to them for doing something good.

I buy a great many things used, but not strings. I would rather not have one break, and I have this feeling (correct or not) that used strings are more likely to break. I used to save an old set in my case in the event that if one broke I could replace it, but now I just keep a new set on hand 100% of the time.

I also have a preferred amount of break-in and it seems that would be hard to replicate with a used set.

All that said, I have no issues with others doing it; it is just not for me.

I just really like installing snappy new strings when I install them. Even flats, I feel like they're really MINE if I'm the one who puts them thru their break-in process.

That said, if I'm looking to experiment and can't get enough info on a certain string type from 'Tube videos, I'd probably consider a used set if the price is right. Coiled up, they fit into the saucepan neatly for a little boiling & sanitizing action (though I suppose one shouldn't boil tapewounds). I've yet to do such a thing, but there's some nice-sounding strings out there I didn't care about till I developed more ear for the subtleties of particular makes & styles.

All this string talk convinced me to order a set of TI flats. Strings and Beyond has a ten percent off sale of TI strings. So, I’ll leave some extra on the winds and not set the witness point until I know I like them. If I hate them, TB Classifieds here they come.

Glad I don't like TI Flats...because at the price they cost new, I would be very tempted to buy them if you don't like them, and while you are my friend for life, I don't know where you've been :D

I take strings off and put them back on all the time. Never had an issue at all.
