Just measured those two headstocks pictured above:
The original '78 jazz headstock is exactly 9/16" and the '08 american standard jazz is exactly 5/8" thick.

The new American Standards come with lightweight tuners... If it's thicker to reduce dead spots, isn't that a bit counteractive?

Yes it is counteractive indeed. Anyway, my '08 sounds just fine.

So did they fattened up the headstock in order to put lighter tuners on, or did they put on lighter tuners and then... wait. What?

I've been making a killing turning '50s Precisions into Roadworn '50s.

I basically buy them new, throw them down the stairs a few times, then sell them for $300 more than I paid. People are prepared to spend extra for a better tone.
