I finally did it! US Spector time and plans for revamp.

I finally did it! I have wanted a USA Spector for over a decade but price and availability in Australia kept me dreaming. I have owned 4 Spectors over the years and still have 3 and really love the brand and the basses. I am all for bass brands with tiered levels of basses and I have worked my way from owning a Korean Legend first and then enjoying two Euros but always lusting after a Woodstock bass.

Backstory: In the past few years my Spector love really cemented itself and I have been really loving my Euro 4 and NS Dimension that wanting a US bass, specifically a NS5 has become very real.

Getting a new US bass is just been beyond my ability to swing and the used market is hugely limited in Australia. So when I saw this 2010 NS5-XL come up it in my price range my ear pricked up. If I am completely honest though looks wise this bass is definitely not my thing. Whilst I love buckeye burl I love the dark, swampy style and this very yellowed look is definitely not my thing. So initially I was not interested but after selling some gear and having a bit of cash I kept coming back to it.

I love a good project! I have had some mad ones over the years…e.g learning to build guitars to build myself a Wal like bass (before it became a thing that everyone was doing) and more recently getting either the first or second prototype LHZ preamp ever and buying a brand new Euro and modding it on the first day of owning it! But taking a very good US Spector and fully refinishing it is bold even for me.

The bass: It’s a 2010 NS5-Xl with buckeye burl top and what I am pretty sure is a Walnut back. Gold hardware and Pauferro board. It has an Aguiliar OB3 preamp which I was really bummed about because one of the huge draws of a US bass is the real HAZ..more on this later. Looks in excellent condition for a 15 Year old bass which is great.

Pros:

Great condition

All the US touches like abalone, volute, carve, premium woods

EMG’s

Stuart Era bass. I love the new basses and still hope to own one but having a Stuart era bass is a thing for me. I have always been a huge fan of the brand and the story.

Cons:

Light and yellowish colouring to the buckeye is not to my taste

Gold hardware is tarnished and not my favourite

Not HAZ preamp

The Plan:

So the plan is to make this bass my own and work with what I have. A custom spec NS5 landed in Australia is almost 4x the cost of this bass second hand so compromising a little is really not that bad in the end.

  • Have bass professionally refinished in either a stained or tinted dark satin finish. I will finish the bass up to the line of the volute to maintain the original signature and markings. I would rather a stain so that it can still pop the grain but I am unsure if that is possible especially as it is buckeye but darkening up to a translucent black is the plan. Maybe slighty burst but because spectors are maple in the middle I would rather it darker the whole way through. I have contemplated doing it myself with stain as I do have some finishing skills but there is some tricky things at play here that might best be left to a real pro
  • Source US black hardware hopefully.
  • Source a HAZ…I am a huge fan of the LHZ and will likely add it but I am going on a quest to add the real deal to this bass as I think it is fitting that an authentic NS5 gets the intended pre I don’t know how or how much but I am going to try to get one for this bass
  • Add P J EMG’s probably the X pickups. Obviously still in Soapbar config

Few pics for inspiration on where my mind is at with this.

I've dubbed it The Ugly Duckling. Should be here on monday. Promise to keep updates going.

Also just wanted to add that I totally get that this is a beautiful bass and to some this might be a silly undertaking but for me it is doing the best with what i am able. My whole purpose is to own basses that inspire me to play and enjoy. I know the sound and feel of this bass will be incredible I am just working on the aestetics to suit my tastes and I really love projects!

Lol. Come on, that's not ugly. I've seen ugly, and that's not even close! :roflmao:

But a satin finish is right up my alley, so can't wait to see how this comes out.

Great idea!! Make it your own and get it just the way meant it. True dream basses are not meant to have features that you settled on.

Can’t wait to see the outcome . I’m sure it will be worth the effort money and time .

Bass arrived today! 1 hour before i had to go to practice! So got a good 4 hours solid workout tonight. I could not put it down. Feel in the hand is just phenomenal. I had never even held a US before. Tone was excellent truly awesome. Alot of mid low growl reminds me of a Warwick bass but still cut through in a pleasing way but not as aggressive as my other basses. Definitely a spector just a bit warmer and It has dual EMG TW pickups which was an interesting surprise which probably attributes to some of the warmth. I play in a Modern metal band with lots going on so definitely a test to ability to cut into a full band.
Playabiltity was the biggest surprise. I owned a euro 5 for many years so i am familiar with the shape and feel but this bass is far more balanced than that was. I was forever adjusting that bass to feel right. This one just sat there and copped all my usual abuse. Sustain was also the best I have ever felt in a bass.

To sum up the experience i would say this bass is what i consider solid. It has a balanced tone and feel that did not waver which changes the way you engage with the instrument. This is the definition of what a great bass needs to be and the experience of playing it for the first time is one that will stay with me.

Still bloody ugly though!

I bet it will turn out great!! I did the same thing with this NS-2, got a really good deal on it but I've always wanted a purple one so I had a local guy refinish it, here's some before and after pics.

Wow! I LOVE Purple and was thinking of getting a Fortress One refinished in purple or pearl white. After seeing this............I think purple. Absolutely stunning!! 😍
