I got involved with a lawsuit today.

Specifically, this one -

Really cool bass. It's a 70's Memphis "lawsuit" copy of a Fender Jazz Bass. I picked it up for $100 off Craigslist. After a little cleanup, new strings, and a setup, it's a really cool bass. Plus, it doesn't have the goofy "cartoonish" headstock that many "lawsuit" basses have...this one is definitely Fender shaped.

Yeah - I figured the worst case scenario is that I can sell it for more than I have in it. The block/bound ones with the real Fender headstock shape tend to fetch quite a bit more than the later ones with the "not Fender" headstock shapes. But it's a good sounding bass - I'll probably at least see how it does on a gig or two.

I say for $100 you won.

#1)Black w/ maple/blocks=good combination.

#2)Fender style trussrod adjustment(no chrome cover on the headstock).

#3)If it's a two piece neck it's matched really well.

#4)Fenderish tuners, string tree.

#5)It's got jazz knobs on it.

That's a great looking bass for $100, especially with the block inlays! Now just throw a 70's Fender Jazz Bass decal on the front of the headstock and a Geddy Lee signature on the back and you will have yourself a $100 GL Jazz.

That's a great looking bass for $100, especially with the block inlays! Now just throw a 70's Fender Jazz Bass decal on the front of the headstock and a Geddy Lee signature on the back and you will have yourself a $100 GL Jazz.

Honestly (or "dishonestly"), you could fool many people by doing a few things....

1) sand the face of the headstock, put a Fender logo on, and respray clear coat

2) change the tuners (which are good tuners) for 70's style Fender tuners

3) change the pickguard

4) change the bridge baseplate

5) put a set of Antiquities in

6) add a "F" neck plate with appropriate serial number

Wouldn't cost much, if you were the dishonest sort. No, it wouldn't be perfect, but you could fool a LOT of people. The build quality on this bass is very, very good.
