I have a stupid question about ricks.

Used to be, in the olden days they were equipped with a pickup we call the horse shoe. It had magnitised metal surrounds that were part of the function of the pickup. When they were discontinued, they made the faux horse shoe. Its an artifact. Its now a peice of plastic. I personally like it. But I also like the old jazz with its covers as well. I use mine to rest my hand on when i am picking.
Most people take them off. There is a nasty little area on them, with the cover off, that one could cut their finger on. Pickguardian has a nice little retrofit peice to take care of that.
