Doesn't red usually indicate "out of bounds"? I skied Chamonix for a week but don't remember much about the signs (other than the depictions of people falling into crevasses).

Doesn't red usually indicate "out of bounds"? I skied Chamonix for a week but don't remember much about the signs (other than the depictions of people falling into crevasses).
Iv'e been Snowboarding 20 seasons, 30+ days a season and just last year skied for the first time since middle school. Now, with my new obsession with bass, (just started last spring) I really want to buy some Ski's... Man, I need to find some cheaper hobbies...
I haven't skied there for over fifteen years so I couldn't comment on the current signage or trail maps. I lived there for six years and don't recall anything being technically out of bounds (like get yer pass pulled "out of bounds") except for the area with the old mine pits and shafts...even so we skied it. Things may have changed though. Still, due to the steepness, tightness of the trees it's almost impossible to rope off or sign every cliff. It's not for beginners, the faint of heart or anyone not willing to take responsibility for his actions and ski the place accordingly. I really loved that mountain...it demands you raise yer game a notch or three.

You're right about the out of bounds part in terms of whether or not you're allowed to go into such areas, but there are designated "runs". I think the way it works is that you are allowed to go wherever you want but if you venture out of the designated areas you're on your own.
The only thing I miss about living in PA is the ability to go skiing. OH is flat, and what "ski resorts" they have here aren't worth the gas to get to. I drove out to my parent's place first weekend in Feb. last year to catch that big snowstorm. First time skiing since '01. It was like trying to ski on mashed potatoes, but still fun.
I don't see why they even teach the snowplow at all, it's generally ineffective unless you're on powder, and really only useful when at the lift station. As for snowboarders in PA, they tend to go down all the same trails as the skiers, but they'll intentionally stop and build moguls in the middle of the trail. A bit irresponsible to do that on the trails that aren't rated high in difficulty as there are a lot of people learning on them, raises the difficulty up and could get someone injured.
Anyway, if anyone's into buying ski equipment and are looking for some boots, I highly recommend the Dalbello Aerro front entry boots.

I'm kidding - I have no idea what the conditions are like in Europe this year (other than at Heathrow...). I've always wanted to go skiing in Switzerland. Unfortunately, both times I visited that lovely country it was during the summer!Now all you need is some snow!
We've had plenty of snow since November, right now it's perfect, provided the temperature stays low enough above 1000ft...
Snowboarding is not skiing! While it is on snow, and fun, it is not skiing. Alpine/ Downhill skiing is fine, but "real" skiing is Cross Country skiing.
Heh, I say learnt when I talk.. no one ever brought it to my attention until last year (I'm 25). Figured out i learned to say learnt from my dad, he says it all the time.
