Looking for info re high C for a 5 string bass. Currently using a DR LoRider 4 string set with the thinnest g string I had on hand as the C, looking for a proper string for the job.

Info/suggestions, please? Thanks.

You can get sets already made for High C tuning on a five-string bass, so there is no need to mix unless you specifically want to. I like the Bass Boomers set (5M-C-DYB), which runs from .030 to .100.

If you do only want singles for the C, there are places like juststrings.com that sell individual strings, and you would be looking for something in the .030 or so range.

I’d try a local music store; one of the ones not part of a chain. They usually have a box of misfit strings of all gauges. Without them it’d be a fiasco trying to buy a new set for my Hawaiian lap steel guitar. I’m rather particular about each string due to the steel bar having to have full access across the entire board; my third string in particular is a weird one with being a heavier gauge solid string.

I had bad experience with stringjoy. They sent me wrong strings and then ghosted me. And their bass strings are not great. I would go with fretnation. GHS is free shipping in the US if you order over 50$ and are probably guaranteed fresh. If it's not in the catalog, just ask.

Weird.

Not disputing your experience with Stringjoy. If it happened then it happened. But I’ve bought several custom spec string sets from Stringjoy and I’ve been extremely happy with both their product and their service.

I’ve run into a few instances where getting a single C string wasn’t an option the manufacturer offered. In those situations I wound up having to buy the 6-string set and shelve the B. Far from an ideal solution. But if you have your heart set on a specific string set, that might be your only option.

FretNation.com! Singles are no problem.

Single C strings run $4.50 for regular rounds to $13.50 for TI jazz flats.

Going to E-C only cost me about $5. Bought a single C, bumped the E-G over one slot, done. Worked great and more fun than a low B, at least for me. YMMV.

It happened. These are Baritone Guitar sets though, with very specific gauges for Half-Nashville tuning (3rd and 4th strings are an octave higher and I wanted a wound 2nd string). The bass strings were 3rd party from a hybrid guitar company that uses them now and it was not any better than D'Addario XLs. Took them off after 5 days

Don’t know why nobody hear mentioned Daddario .They sell every conceivable single string in many different gauges, and they’re available and almost every music store.
