I would go with a Dingwall because of that bearded guy (L.Sklar) says so and that's good enough for me , and they sound REAL GOOD !
Another vote for Lakland. Versatile and sound great! The Skyline is well within your budget.
Ok, while I think it a little fool hardy to tell another TBer what to buy, I am totally GASing for a Sandberg Cali Central 5… In fact this one:

Playability and sound, all things being equal, no big difference. I don’t bang into my mic stand with no head.
These basses have identical electronics and both have Wenge finger boards.. there’s a bit more growl with the headless in this case due to the pickup placement and slant (both great playing/sounding basses with great necks).
Your question about the cables… I’m using the amp’s effects loop, so I just wrap them like a snake for convenience (1 group to coil vs 3).
I forgot about Sandberg too! I played a really nice 5 string at Bass Central a couple of months ago. A TM5 in Roquefort Blue. It had a good B string. It’s reliced, I don’t know if that’s your thing. They also make a light weight version.
If you're also considering used basses, you might be able to score a used Spector NS-5 XL somewhere around 3000$ to 4000$.
If you're able to, go to Bass Central (maybe get a cheap flight) where you can lay your hands on some really nice basses. When you get there you'll see lots of Sandberg, Spector, and Dingwall in the showroom and there's more in the back. The staff are friendly.
