Compressors "in general" will change your sound, so expect to have to do a little re-EQ'ing to get your sound back.

I disagree. I have two compressors that I use for my PA. I have Presonus ACP88 and a Rane DC-24. I hardly ever use the DC-24 since I bought the ACP88. Both compressors are extremely transparent. To me, that is the sign the sign of a quality compressor. Using a compressor should not change your tone. It can change your tone (for the worse) if you have an extreme ratio setting at a low threshold setting. If you did this, you are not taking full advantage of your amp's power potential. You are essentially playing with your volume squashed no matter how light or aggresive your attack is. Even if you over-compress, your amps tone should still have a dominant presence in the mix.

Next week, I am bringing my head to my bass teacher, and we are going to check things out.

Someone adressed earlier that I may need more power. I don't think so because the gigs that I play are either in auditoriums or I am hooked up to a PA system. Besides, the amp runs at 8 ohms and the cab runs at 4, so it actually runs at 250 watts, which is probably enough but I wouldn't want any less.

Maybe the variety of places I play would constitute me getting a compressor first.

I agree with Adrian that jazz is the last genre for which I would reach for a compressor.

I'd improve your amp/cab first. (well, first I would work on your fingers, then the cab, then the amp, then have some pie, then...) If you do go for a comp., give a look at the RNC.

I ditto this. . IMHO buy an SVT classic all tube monster and dont worry about it. That and an 8-10 and you will be set!
Yea this is not a normal "jazz" set up but the tone is so good!

Why not just :

Turn the gain down
Turn the master bass volume pot down
Play more softly/consistently!!
