I NEED help finding a crossover...

before i start, i am reading google right now looking for answers, just thought maybe someone here could help.
dig this, i am building a cabinet, it houses: Peavey Black Widow "he" BWX,
this speaker has a useable freq. range of 40hz-2khz,
second there is an Eminence Beta 8A 8" mid driver,
Eminence says it is optimized to produce a freq. range of 400hz-4khz,
lastly im using a CTS Piezo model KSN1165A,
im looking for a crossover to deal with the freq's between the 15 and the 8,
i am sure i want the 8" to run at its recommended range as stated above,
but im not sure what to cross the 15 at, ...and as far as i know the 1165 doesnt need crossed at all, but i would like to add an attenuator to it..
any ideas guys?

man, i am totally lost here, i think im in over my head on this project...i dont know if im gonna figure this out....
i keep finding crossovers with low wattage ratings...this cab may actually see 5 or 600 watts...is it good to over lap the 2 drivers....i know those freqs would be louder...but im not sure if i want or need that...oh man...

"stock" crossovers very often are not much good. They have to be made for an "average" driver set, but YOU have a 'specific" driver set......

As one who used to design multi-way PA cabs also, I can tell you that there is a lot of 'tweaking" to get the crossover right.

For one thing, an 8 ohm speaker is NOT "8 ohms" at the frequency where you want to cross it over to a mid or HF speaker. it's higher, probably between 10 and 16 ohms, and the crossover has to be made for THAT and not for 8, or it won't work as expected...... Then you start messing with other factors.

None of that is set up with an off-the-shelf crossover.

But it may work OK for you even so. And if you don't cross over the LF, you avoid some other troubles with power level and the coils.

To get it tweaked-in "for real" requires equipment that most folks don't have, like a TEF or similar. And maybe it won't matter to you. Any crossover is better than none at all........

im about to scrap this idea anyway, im pretty discouraged with it honestly...
i think im going to buy some plans from bill and build a couple of his cabinets and see how that goes, he already did the math, and im quite sure he knows more about this stuff than me,
i think im going to build a dr250 or and omni tallboy 15, i cant decide which route to take, he told me earlier that the 250 really should have a separate sub, and im not sure i have room to haul it all around that way,
but i think thats what ill do, this project continues to throw up roadblocks and im getting tired of it. i think ill buy the plans for both cabs and then decide for sure.
there is a sound im going for, i just cant find it.

Unless you know what you're doing, or prepared to put a lot of time and effort into learning, experimenting and testing then buy or build a known design.

Madisound ( www.madisound.com ) will custom build you a X'over to fit your needs. Tell them what speakers you want to use and the power rating of the X'over and they'll do the rest. I told them what I wanted and they quoted me a price which I paid, it was cheaper than I'd expected. When they arrived they were completely assembled ready to go into my cabinets! They're good people.

Good call. I hardly play around with 'phile gear any more so I completely forgot about them.
