I need help please

I'm 15 years old and I picked up the bass a year ago and I'm self thought. My parents refuse to get me bass lessons. I'm not very good at teaching myself because I lack motivation...
Can someone please give me some.good resources for teaching myself until I can convince my parents?

First off, learn the fretboard. Know the notes at each fret well.
Then learn simple songs with chord charts.

Also,
Listen to Rush, Yes, Emerson Lake and Palmer, and Pink Floyd.

Also listen to symphonic pieces of music: Particularly the piece "Marche Militaire Francaise" by Saint-Saëns, "The Planets" suite by Holst, Pretty much anything by Mussorgsky or Mozart, and Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.

Finally, listen to A LOT of Jazz. Miles Davis's album "Kind of Blue" is an essential. As is pretty much anything by Charles Mingus.

Apply what you hear. Look for sheet music for the symphonic stuff, and bass tabs for the rock.

Good luck.

Get a job and pay for your own lessons. I did. My parents also didn't take me to any college auditions. I figured it out and am now a pro bassist & music teacher.

If you really want it you will find a way. You CAN do it ( if you want ).

What he said!! Take responsibility. Take control. You will not regret it no matter what you wind up doing with your life. Decide to be successful. Decide not to rely on other people for what you want in your life. Goodness will rain down upon you.

In the mean time, there are tons of resources on the web. Check out:

Although I had good music teachers at school, I was always a poor reader when I was young. I tended to learn by ear which, for some stupid reason, no one could understand. And so I learned bass by sheer determination! I about wore holes in all my vinyl picking the needle up and putting it down. I started with simple rock tunes figuring out and memorizing a section at a time. I got better! By the time I was 18 I had figured out much of Jaco's debut album.
