I ordered my first Fender and it arrived damaged :(

So I decided to purchase my first Fender Precision and when I opened the box I found out the lacquer had received a serious hit. Bummer! I had to sent it back and now I am waiting for a new one

Have you ever experienced something like that? I am curious if this is common occurence
or a rare one.

That sucks, but it’s a shipper issue, not fender. Definitely took a hit along the trip that was “above and beyond” normal handling.

I realize that doesn’t help your current situation, but guitar/music companies that ship as much as fender/GC/Sweetwater/etc definitely know how to pack their guitars .... they have to, or they’d be broke. So I would think that your replacement should be fine.

Funny thing is the cardboard case looked intact. The bass was inside and wrapped by a decent soft case. It really looked like a bass that took a hit before it was put inside the packaging. I was surprised there were not styrofoam blocks or layers inside the cartoon box, just the soft case (probably due to evnironmental regulations?)

That's the reason you buy a Fender lacquer finish in the first place.

It looks like trash in a hurry.
