I Put A Spell On You (Pino)

A singer I play with wanted to cover the Jeff Beck and Joss Stone version of this song. Pino Palladino was playing some great stuff and I felt it was a good line to transcribe.
There is a 4 bar intro, a 16 bar form is played twice with a guitar solo starting the form the second time. Then a four bar outro. Enjoy. Feel free to add your comments regarding harmonic analysis.

Thank you for posting this! We are planning to do this in our band and I have been trying to learn the Dave Gilmour version on utube. I guess this is similar. I don't suppose there is any chance of posting this in tab form please?

About Gilmour's harmonic vision of the song.

I don't like the Intro harmonic movement/development, which to me sounds detached from the song's main body.

I don't like the harmonic movement G - F - Eb - D (a la Ray Charles) in Verse.

I really don't like that MAJOR chord that follows the harmonic movement in Verse.

I truly believe that Gilmor's interpretation changed the song's essence so much that it is difficult to call it "I put a spell on you".

My question.

What do you think about the bass not playing/hitting notes with the snare drum?

Pino is using more space for Gilmour and Mica. His playing is a reaction to the feel of the performance and it works well. The Beck version features much more of the shuffle feel from the original Hawkins version and with the palm muted Precision the song has a lot more punch and groove and that's cool too.

Thank you very much for the tab. I have to admit I spending far too much time on this song and all its variants. My guitarist (it is his band, and my first band ever) wants to do the Gilmour version but I'm struggling to follow all the chord changes and not sure I've got it licked. Personal I prefer the CCR version - in fact most of the 'shufflly' versions sound more more appealing and more interesting from a bass point of view.
If I can only remember to do the G-F#-E#-D at the right point in the Gilmour version (and when just to noodle in G-C-D) I'll be ok......

The Beck/Stone version is very similar to the original and also utilizes the Ray Charles style descending chords.
Autobot22, if you're having trouble with remembering the progression, you should sit down with the song and do what's called a chord chart. It's something I should have added in my transcription, but I was lazy. Btw I realize that I numbered the measures wrong.

Whoops... I meant G, F#, Eb, D.....so I made a typo but now just went to the bass and realised (doh) the F sounds much better than the F# so I was wrong there as well!

I think I'll see if Ivan pursuade my BL to try the beck/stone version. I know he wants to do it in G...what key is the beck stone version in......is it F#?

Yes Beck/Stone version is F# minor. I don't think it's very different from the Gilmour/Mica version. I think I'm going to do a chord chart of both versions. I believe everyone could stand to learn a lot.

Marilyn Manson gets little respect but I love this interpretation. It may be a bit much for some folk but when its played like this, it's a monster and I get cold chills playing it on stage.

Is Manson’s version in the same key? F# minor?

(I still don’t have a clue how to determine keys of songs - it’s not like I can just aim a guitar tuner at the speakers and get the answer. - Is it?? Noone has advice on that either do they?)

The Manson tune is in E minor. Listen to the pitch or note you are trying to figure out then see if you can identify it on a keyboard or your bass guitar when it's in tune. Careful though, especially if you are trying to figure something out from an old cassette tape or even some recordings that aren't always pitch perfect reproductions and sometimes, especially on older recordings, the musicians weren't in tune to begin with. Good luck on your musical journey.

I don't know about Gilmore's "harmonic vision" but they used Nina Simone's 1965 jazz album version and Mica copied the vocal styling almost note for note.
