I think I need less string tension - which way to go?

I recommend these if you want to go the new string route:

They're tapes but they sound like broken in stainless steel rounds. They're also very light tension. I don't recommend tuning them lower than standard.

However, downtuning your bass with your current strings is also an option.

I believe the thumb on my fretting hand is starting to get arthritic, which is causing some issues in being able to consistently fret cleanly. I believe it's time to consider strings with less tension.

I'm currently using hex core EB Cobalt rounds 45-105, and I'm not sure where to start. I tried round core strings decades ago but felt they were too floppy.

Would I be better off trying a 45-105 set with round cores, or keep using hex cores and drop down to 40-100?

That particular string is a bit stiffer than the average. I would try going down to light gauge. If you’re set on keeping the gauge try some different strings. To me markbass energy series stainless steel were very similar to cobalts but will be a bit softer.

Thanks to all the advice, everyone! I noticed when I switched to my Spector, strung with SIT Powerwounds 45-105, the tension wasn't as strong as the Cobalts on the Fender. It seems the E and A strings are still a little too tense, but the D and G feel nice.

I'm probably going to order a 45-100 Powerwound set on the Fender to replace the Cobalts.
