If right off the bat, someone is telling me how to play... I don't play with them. But there has been a good point made... play within the genre. Rush (with the exception of some older stuff and that cover album) are not a blues band. Basically I say do something in I-IV-V... and the guitarist should be happy, if he isn't, screw it...
