I want a Rick really bad.

This has been discussed a ton, but IME the geddy sound is best acheived on a modern ric with lots of mid and beat the snot out of the strings.

Yeah, I think the Geddy sound is best achieved through really hard plucking. I've even managed to get a similar sound on my friend's low end Ibanez by doing so.

As for Ric tone, when I play Rickenbackers or copies of them, most of the time I use only the bridge pickup. Lots of bite that way. The neck pickup I use when I don't want that "bite your head off" tone.

It seems like everyone goes through the "Ric phase" at some point. I did. I had huge GAS for one, because I saw all the people on youtube playing them. I thought, wow, those look and sound really cool. I went to a music store not long after, saw a black 4001, picked it up, plugged it in. HATED IT. If you played one before and like it, then go for it. If you haven't i STRONGLY recommend you go and try one out before you buy one. Rickenbacker basses have a very distinct tone, and i guess it's just not my cup of tea....

If you played it in a band context you might think differently. If I were to judge all my basses on their soloed sound I would sell both my Ric and P.

Last December 2008 I found a used 2002 Rickenbacker 4003 bass in nice condition for $900 at a local music store in Albuquerque. It's a great bass!

Shop around.

Hey, wait a sec.! I thought the name Rob Martinez buying a bass from a store in Albuquerque sounded familiar. Then I saw the plug at the bottom of your entry.

The DaddyOs! Great band... you guys really had everyone up and dancing at the Southern New Mexico Wine Festival a few months back. You should have taken the Ricky along with the Hofner and that pink bass!!!....... Pink bass??? That's not very rock and roll. J/k. My wife thought it was cool, though:)

Ah, but I digress, sorry, it was just funny to see a name on the forum I actually knew.

That pink bass is cool, BUT what's even cooler is a 4003 or a 4001 with the cap modification. My 4003 is a 2006 Fireglo and never fails to garner compliments on its looks or how it sounds.

What's the topic of this thread? One forgets. Oh yeah, buy the Rick bass if it is within your current means.

The neck profile on the Ricky is fairly easy to adjust to. Some say the tone is more versatile than the Jazz bass. Others say the opposite. I'll say it simply sounds very good. I think Rickenbacker's uniform neck width makes more sense that the narrow to wide of a Jazz bass. I find that a little difficult to acclimate to! I do love the Geddy Jazz bass, though.

Anyway, GET the bass. If you don't like it, you can probably sell it for about the same. Very little risk.

That was a fun gig! Thanks! And yes, the pink bass is an attention getter, that's why I play it. It's a Waterstone Indra.

Hey Rob! I was the one asking about your Hofner and the La Bella strings, your all down-stroke pick technique and the type of Ampeg you were using. My wife was with me, a brunette with long hair.

Anyway, you guys are an excellent band. Keep playing. ABQ needs a great band playing that type of music. I saw a band playing at the Hyatt Tamayo last month and The Daddy Os are head and shoulders better.
Maybe we'll catch one of the shows the next time we're up there!

Hell yes I remember you and your wife! VERY cool people! And that you noticed I played with down strokes only! Excellent! Keep in touch through PM here or through the Daddy Os web site, would love to see you guys at a gig again.
