I agree- it sounds like a Rat, or at least a modded Rat. You could try a Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive, which is a pretty flexible OD/distortion pedal and get pretty close to that, as well as have a lot of variations without sucking out the bottom end.

I think he used some Rat incarnation for it. It sounds rattish and if you watch.... THIS CLIP!
‪Foo Fighters - Back And Forth - Krist Novoselic plays bass‬‏ - YouTube
At 2:14 it looks like a rat next to his foot. And ofcourse the Ripper has something to say. Black has such a special tone to it!
Ugh, who are these engineers and producers you've worked with? Their job is to realize YOUR vision, not the other way around. Clean tasteful and tight? No . Frigging. Thank you. How boring. Not every bassist's job is to go "thump thump thump"
Sorry for the derail.
RE - The producer thing. I think folks are talking about 2 different types of situations. One is a bass player coming in as a 'hired gun' to lay down a bassline on someone else's song. In that situation you are probably expected to fit the bill in whatever way you are told to. In the other situation you are coming in as an artist to record YOUR stuff. I have an appreciation for how a producer might be able to help you get the best out of your vision, but in that situation I'd have trouble just shutting up and doing what I'm told...always have...

Due to inflation or something, back in '74 they cost about $1700 in today's money.About Rippers, why are they all so expensive? Didn't they retail for $300 (or so I've heard) back in the day?
Playing with a coin, sounds like to me in the isolated track. Not sure if you are still searching for this tone but I just wanted to mention that it sounds like he's playing quite aggressively with a pick too.
There is no one in Vampire Weekend named Novoselic. Krist Novoselic was the bassist for Nirvana and he did a guest appearance for the Foo Fighters on "I Should Have Known"
EDIT: I mistakenly linked to a Vampire Weekend video I was showing my friend. I'll switch it out right now.
